I didn't like him at first because he seemed very cynical but over time I realized it was just his way of speaking. At the end of the class, he's one of my favorite professors. He's not always good at asking clear questions and his essay prompts can be frustrating but I learned a lot from the class and really enjoyed the discussions.

knows a lot about Africa and means well but clearly has some profound psychological issues. very condescending, insecure and passive-aggressive. the class was worth it because of the reading material but by the end i was exhausted, frustrated and tired of how he treated me and my (intelligent, thoughtful and sensitive) classmates. AVOID.

David is a wonderful professor. At first I thought the class was slow, but when we got into the swing of things I began to look forward to meeting. There was a ton of reading, so be prepared, but it was really interesting, and we had great discussions. If you are interested in Africa, he knows a lot, lived there for many years, and is passionate.

David Newbury is a gem ... He is one of the most fabulous professors I've ever had. He does assign a ton of reading, but I guarantee you will leave his class knowing everything there is to know about the subject. So, if you take his class, take it because you want to be challenged, if you want an easy A ... forget it. Reapply to a state school!!

Dr. Newbury assigns a TON of reading and expects you to do it all, and if you don't, he gets mad, but if you do most of it he'll like you. He's VERY smart and is a good but FAST lecturer. He's really helpful too, I even emailed him stressed out at 9pm the night before a test and he emailed me study tips. You'll learn a ton.

Professor Newbury was very understanding, but he consistantly lost papers and drafts I had given him. I felt we had a lot of material to cover in class and would have appreciated a little more structure. I can't complain, though - I got a higher grade than expected.

Comment:
Though his assignments can be vague and lectures occasionally unfocused, I liked him overall. He was legitimately interested in students ideas and knew his stuff (in this case, decolonizing Africa). The amount of work was enormous, but he was always willing to meet with students to share resources and suggestions.

Comment:
Maybe if he didn't treat his students like we're five we would be more engaged in class. He isn't demanding in class, but on papers and exams he is pretty demanding. There is a disconnect. Treat students like we're intelligent people (consistently).
