I regret taking her class every time I look at my GPA. I would not wish this class on my worst enemy, and hope you make the correct decision in dropping this class (something I wish I had done). Don't do it to yourself, or your family. Thank you, and know in avoiding this class, you will save yourself from ridiculously irrelevant activities.

Prof. Barksdale-Shaw is a wonderful, inspirational woman who is passionate about herself and her interests. That being said, she is a terrible professor. She is not clear on what is expected from assignments, and grades harshly with very little feedback other than "check MLA format" The amount of work and reading assigned is crazy

There's rarely a dull moment in Professor Barksdale-Shaw. Barksdale-Shaw is an incredibly knowledgeable, colorful, inspirational teacher who is dedicated to making sure that the class understands the material. However, she's also a tough customer, with a TON of reading and an extreme grading scale (84% is a 2.5?!?!). Fun, challenging professor.

I would NEVER recommend her to anyone. She is very picky, provoked arguments in class, and never seemed to be on topic.

(SVSU) It was easy in her class to receive participation points. There was a short paper due every class period, even on days that large papers and/or presentations were assigned. This seemed a little over the top to me. She encouraged students to go to her office hours, and when they did, she was extremely helpful.

Comment:
(SVSU 205) Professor assigns three five-page papers, which are very specific but she also is terrible in describing what she is looking for. The three papers are on top of the 2 one paged papers due every week for one of the 10 books/plays you read in the class. Takes forever to grade, marks down grade but is unable to point out mistakes.

(SVSU ENG 202) She has no concept you doing anything but this class. The amount of writing you have to do is insane. You get absolutely no feed back, just a grade a month later. You have to write three 5 page papers, give three 5 minute presentations, write two 1-2 page papers per week on the eight different books you have to read.

(SVSU ENGL205) Get ready two write two papers a week that are only worth 1 point each. Does not give good feedback on them either and takes forever to give feedback. You have to read a lot to write the papers too. I do not recommend this class to anyone. She's also very serious about participation but no one ever understands what we're reading.

Professor Barskdale-Shaw taught my English 111 at SVSU. She was so specific with papers yet never said what she wanted. Assignments were vague and she talked down to us. Honestly dreaded this class every time I had it. Nothing I could have done would make me get an A unless I was a favorite which I was not. You will write 45+ for 1 pt each. Awful.

Participation and attendance are very important in this class. She assigns way too much work, she gives 2 close readings(1 page paper) a week but, they are only worth 1 participation point each. She does not care about the work load of your other classes. She does not give very much feedback for you to improve your writing.

Barksdale-Shaw has a rough reputation of being very strict, hard, and not a good teacher. If you come to class and pay attention you will do just fine. She covers everything you need to know and more, along with no physical exams. Participation is 20% of your grade so if you show up and contribute you will pass.

She's a really fun teacher & class goes by SO fast! Grading is based on attendance, participation, & three papers. Show up, participate, & do the participation writing assignments & you'll earn all your participation points. Don't miss class because the papers are a big percentage of your grade and you'll need that class time time to prepare.

The only downfall is not knowing your grade at all times. She is a good English teacher and she knows her stuff. Class was always fun, but I shine when it comes to English so maybe that's why I liked her.

Horrible teacher. Dropped the class. Taught Shakespeare with powerpoints. Slides were full and she used 10pt font. Made Shakespeare more complicated. Didn't help with errors on papers. Just wrote grammatical error. What does that even mean?? Literally wouldn't help me with anything.

ugh, this class was so frustrating because it seems like everyone got the same grade on papers, C+ or C, and she only wrote 'grammatical and stylistic errors' not pointing out where the errors were. she's really nice though, just a tough grader.
