He has a difficult personality and you have to write down everything that he says during lecture. However, if you can fill out his study guide you'll be fine for the tests.

This was the hardest class I had this semester, took it as an elective and ended up being my most time-consuming. Would not recommend but his class also is not impossible to pass. He is very old fashioned and speeds through lots of information in a short amount of time.

Dr. Bernhardt is the hardest professor I've had at SLU, but is also the most caring individual. Read, listen, TAKE NOTES. He's old school and asks you to know material to the minute detail. If you work hard, he will make you a better student overall. He made me the best student I could possibly be, I adore him!

Comment:
Dr. Bernhardt gets a bad rap but he is a good teacher. Tape recordings are essential as it is impossible to take good notes otherwise. Tests are very straightforward and your performance depends on how good your notes are. Lab was very disorganized and sometimes the Graduate TA didn't even know what was going on. Overall, he is a good teacher.

Comment:
Very dry lectures, during which it's *necessary* to furiously take notes. Covers too much too fast & is unclear at times. Super detailed tests are impossible, despite being given a study guide. When everyone did poorly, he blamed the class. Regularly insults our intelligence. Avoid this fogey if you can. grade = midterm, final, term paper

Comment:
Lectures are completely boring and includes way to many unnecessary details about his experiences. Very out there and makes awkward jokes. Tests are very specific and must take extremely detailed notes every lecture, read his book that he wrote, and watch/read all the links he sends you. Horrible class and horrible teacher.

Comment:
Dr. Bernhardt is a little out there. He stresses class notes and for good reason, a good deal of the exams are drawn from them. Overall, the class is way too much trouble than its worth. He is rigid in his grading and his class policies are nothing short of asinine. Arguably the worst professor in the biology department. Avoid.

Definitely his own person and a little out there. Must take really solid class notes as test is totally based on them. Also know everything on the test outlines he gives. Pay attention in lab. Fair grading scale and drops lowest test (besides lab exam) doubling the highest. Overall good prof very knowledgeable about his subject.
