I call Professor Cockburn the "Chalkboard Cheetah" because in a single lecture, she will fill up an entire slate multiple times and just does not ever slow down. She explains things very well though. Occasionally she does tell some funny stories to lighten the mood. But only take her class if you are very passionate about math.

It's tough in the beginning because she expects a lot. But once you learn what she wants, and put in the effort to nail everything down, you will get good grades. Absolutely go to her office hours. Cockburn is the clearest teacher in the math department.

Comment:

Professor Cockburn is great if you are interested in math and genuinely put forth an effort. Do not take her classes if you want an easy way to finish a minor. She's definitely challenging, but her lectures are great and whatever you don't understand from class she will explain in office hours. Probably my favorite professor at Hamilton so far.

Comment:

Sally Cockburn amazing. She is really tough, but it's because she holds her students to high standards. She has every right to do so, as she teaches VERY well. She is thorough, picky, and organized; exactly what a math professor should be. If you take the effort to approach her and open a dialogue with her, she will put all your questions to rest.

Lots of work, but if you put in the time, it is possible to succeed. Normal homework due every class plus additional writing assignments due every other class. Unfortunately, she does not discuss homework problems in class. However, she knows her stuff, and probably teaches the material much better than easier professors.

She teaches really well. She knows how to make Math fun and related to you. Everything is crystal clear. Notes are very neat. But very hard, and sometimes she gets pissed off.

I second the person below who claims the Math Senior Seminar is the best math class at Hamilton, and it's mostly due to Sally Cockburn. Sally has razor sharp wit and an even sharper intellect. Always on her toes and expects you to be too.

If you're actually interested in math, she is a great professor. She pushes you hard and expects a lot of you--but she gives just as much back. AWESOME NOTES and always always there for office hours. She's great about getting assignments graded and back to you. I would never hesitate to take another class with her

Linear algebra was pretty easy, but Cockburn makes it hard with lots of long assignments due every class..luckily she lays out everything you need to know, and I mean EVERYTHING...shes a lot more of a person in linear than calc, and its great when she makes fun of the dumb people! dont take if you wanna walk through linear, but its def worth it

Good notes etc, but she seems high strung at times...when you catch her on a good day, though, its pretty nice - just dont piss her off. Nothing is ridiculously hard in Calc II either, but there is a bit of work. Not bad - gotta respect her.
