The class itself is not that bad. But the test are ridiculous--you essentially have to memorize the learning objectives verbatim and they're not exactly short either. The TA's are only helpful for SPSS and are incompetent when it comes to all other assignments. As long as you have good attendance & a spectacular memory, you'll do fine in this class

I was terrified to take this class because of the subject matter. It was early in the morning too which I figured wouldn't help. Surprisingly though, he got me interested in the class and helped with any problems and was willing to listen and work with me. Ended up being a much better class than expected

It helps if you can memorize what the TA's say, and Dr. Call says in the powerpoint. I was very average but the assgnments boost your grade.

I really like Dr. Call. The tests are kind of hard, but he gives you all possible test questions at the beginning of the semester, so just study and you'll do fine! He is SO helpful if you go and talk to him; he talked me all the way through some assignments I was struggling with.

Anyone who says this class is hard is crazy. He gives all the possible test questions at the start of the semester. As long as you answer them during class and go to the test review you will get an a easily.

This class initially appeared really cool but i lost a lot of interest as the semester went by. Lectures are purely him talking and doing powerpoints, amusing at times, boring at others. Tests are tough. A lot of memorization and writing definitions and what not. He comes off cold, but his TA's help. Good luck on the computer part - little training

Lots of these ratings make him seem awful. He comes off a little cold but is really helpful if you truly don't understand the material. His TA's are great. I think for lots of people, this is their first experience with an upper level class, but when you take higher level classes you'll realized that what he teaches is vital to the major.

I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Call. He has a lot of valuable experience to share with the students to help us gain practical skills. This is one of a few classes that provide demonstrable skills to sociology students, and Dr. Call does a good job at teaching us. Generally, those who didn't like/complained about his class didn't invest in it.

He is so monotone, and made the subject boring. It's important for sociology majors, so I suggest taking it from someone else. He knows his stuff because he worked in the field, but every other way is wrong and he's not very good at teaching it.

Good class. Not the most interesting class in the world but it is a good class. Do the learning objectives because the test questions come directly from them. Do this and study them and you should get a good grade. He's not there to trick you he wants you to ace the class.

This class isn't as bad as people are making out to be. It's rough, but it's very possible to get a good grade. He is very approachable if you have questions, so if you don't get it, it's your own fault. Just do your work and study the leaning objectives and powerpoints. If you do this, you will pass.

I got an A in his class but required time/effort. He gives you a course/test study guide which is very extensive so it requires a lot of studying and memorizing, but contains the test questions so if you study it you will do well on his tests. He knows his stuff (in field) but doesn't know how to teach it. Monotone, boring bad teacher but got an A

Kinda boring. Gives you test questions before hand. Don't procrastinate and DO THEM becuase there are a lot. I thought I would do a lot worse than I did, got a A-. Not hard, just get everything in and you should be fine.

True, this isn't the most exciting class, but I thought if you actually made an effort it was easy to get an A. Dr. Call does want students to do well and provides lots of opportunities for bringing your grade up. He also gives you all the test questions at the beginning of the semester...so who cares if it's not multiple choice?

This guy loves to hear himself talk. His teaching style can only be described as idiotic and the tests are horrible. He didn't even show up to the in-class test and let his TA take all of the heat for the unintelligible nature of much of the test. Avoid at all cost, but since he's the only soc 300 teacher, good luck.

dr. call, yes, is boring. but his class is easy and useful for higher level classes. the tests are easy if you memorize your learning objectives - all the test questions come directly from those! go to the ta's - they are super helpful. and do the extra credit.

I agree with everything past people have posted, although I had him for religion and they have him for sociology. He is boring by nature and does not know how to outline a lecture. But it's not just that he is boring, he is hard to learn from because he is lectures were all over the place. Spirit/academically I would take from somebody else.

Ohhh man....this is hands down the worst required class for the Sociology major. Turn in everything ASAP because he'll never give you a due date but will mark things off for being "late". The tests are horrible. Unless you memorize your entire packet of learning objectives you will struggle. All open-ended questions and no multiple choice.
