This class is a ton of reading a writing, and the classes are a little confusing at times. That said, the professor is very passionate about his subject, and happy to answer classes. Communicate to him, go to office hours, and put in time on your reading and assignments, and you'll be okay.

Prof Messenger is a nice guy. The books get better as you get into the course, the BEST being Tender Is The Night (he loves Fitzgerald). It can be hard to keep up as he never assigns pages to read to, its all on your own. Two 5 page papers, 3 reflections, and 2 final project essays and 1 midterm in class exam. The class takes all your effort!!!

Comment:
Messenger is very intelligent and passionate about literature. He is very easy to get off topic and likes to make jokes that I don't understand. To be fair, I have never enjoyed English, but he really pushed the class to read. At some points we were reading one novel a week. He was a very fair grader on papers, he is too nice to give bad grades.

Great and inspirational professor. He's really intelligent, to the point it can be intimidating. The class is pretty hard and there is a lot of books to read. You have to work for the A.

Really understanding professor. Loves connecting literature with pop culture - always making funny references. The class is overall a pretty easy A as long as you pay attention to what he says and work hard on the three papers. Final was take home (5 short essays and 1 long). Midterm was in class identification and response. Very nice guy.

Prof Messenger is an awesome person and a great teacher! The content of the class is very difficult analysis of literature, but he walks you through it. He is lenient on papers as long as you care about the subject and write clearly. Go to his office hours and you'll have the best conversations. His class is almost like a phil class but with lit.

Clearly an erudite and well-read man. Has an astute sense of humor to complement his depth of knowledge. Explains class material effectively. You will learn a lot from him, perhaps more than you might think. Relatively easy grader and reasonable in general. No excuse not to pass this class. Highly recommended.

Prof Messenger was the most influential professor in my English program. If you are interested in literature, analysis and writing, take his class. He helped me learn how to trust my own analysis, write about literature, and enjoy discussing literature with educated people. If you want to get by without reading and thinking, don't take his class

He was an interesting professor. Smart and funny, but not always on task. I had fun, learned quite a bit, and improved my writing. It was mostly helpful having to write papers on books I hadn't read than it was to hear his review. Even still, he was a nice grader, and it was an easy class to pass.

Awesome class, awesome professor! He genuinely cares about what he's teaching. He goes to F. Scott Fitzgerald conferences - how cool! I am taking him for a second time this semester and I am really looking forward to it. If you read, pay attention in class, and put thought and effort into your papers you will do just fine.

I agree with the person who said their interest decreased after the class. He was SO boring and didn't seem to really care. I feel like he's one of those guys who became a professor because he didn't know what else to do. He also picks the worst material to read. It's an easy class, but it's so dull, trite, and useless. Avoid!

I did not like him at all. He was boring, incomprehensible and extremely brutal when it came to grading. His class was a complete waste of my time. My interest in the subject has actually decreased as a result of taking his class.
