Interesting prof. Awful TA's. Your TA does all grading. Nothing Calhoun says in class is needed for papers or tests. But really it is the subject of this class that makes it the most miserable experience.

The kids who don't like him are probably the Sternies; had a lot of them in my recitation. I took it Fall 2009 and still think about him. Immensely intelligent, so friendly (looks at you and smiles), and very hot... Reminds me of Santa. Puts a sociological spin on philosophical history: very cool. I absolutely loved this man and would do him.

Impossible to do all the reading, but papers usually not graded too harshly. He really cares about the topics. At 930 AM is sometimes not quite engaging enough, but when you're awake he's a good teacher. Very approachable.

He's a pretty cool guy, likes to make his jokes, his powerpoints are entertaining if you feel like actually attending lectures [unnecessary]. Recitation is key, having a good TA is important, showing up to lecture/reading the text isn't. sparknotes all the way.

Not Recommended. Grade comes from TA. Lectures, in addition to instantly putting you to sleep are boring and extremely insignificant, usually convering context over content. Class is a history of philosophy course, based on what the writers said, not whether or not their arguments are any good.
