Comment:
Nice but unorganized. His lectures and essay prompts are long-winded and unclear. Being open-ended and being vague are two different things; he was the latter. What the syllabus says is arbitrary. We were assigned a "group writing assignment" a few days before it was due; don't think he knows that coordinating writing for EIGHT people is difficult.

Professor Blanco is one of the most caring professors I've ever had at UCSD and he truly cares about his students. He opens up dialogues in class and even asked the class what we would like to do with the percentage points from our canceled final. Attendance for lectures wasn't mandatory but there were clickers so best to attend! Not a hard grader.

Good class. Great professor. Helpful during office hours. Read the texts, pay attention during class, and you will learn useful information you won't find from other professors.

Professor Blanco is always smiling. He's a very approachable guy and he's really nice. he cares about the students and he's very generous in his grading. Try to participate and pay attention in the class discussions and lecture and you'll get the most out of it. Reading wasn't that necessary to read, if it's too much just skim it or read a summary

Reviews are spot on. The syllabus doesn't matter. I entered the course thinking I would learn about Filipino literature when actuality the majority of the time he spent talking about the history. Reading is also too excessive for a four unit course. Would not recommend if you expect a light course load.

Nice guy. Great ideas. Not that great of a teacher. Most of the criticisms on this page are spot on. This is more like a Hist class than a Lit class. Syllabus means nothing as he adds (without subtracting) on a whim. In my estimation, too much work for a 4 unit class.

He's very passionate about his work, and displays a real willingness to help students learn. He encouraged us to participate in campus protests during an important time in UCSD's history, and put aside time to discuss current events and facilitate discussions. Although he doesn't always stay on topic, he is a good teacher.

Highly invested in his students' education and wellbeing. Tough but helpful grader - CONTACT him and show him drafts of paragraphs/essays; he will respond with constructive advice. In lectures, often uses students' questions as a launch point for his read of the text. Teaches on themes more so than on the readings themselves.

Wonderful professor! Very nice and intelligent. Helpful in office hours. Hard grader but learned a LOT about writing a good paper. His class is a moderate workload but it definitely challenged me to push myself to work hard. Listen to class discussion and presentations--it will help with the papers. I recommend bringing a laptop to take notes on.

He has all the information, he just doesn't present it very well. Lectures, class structure and syllabus were very unorganized. The class was suppose to be on literature, but most of the class was spent on talking about history. He needs to work on his organization and public speaking skills.

Professor knows what he is talking about but is super boring and he stutters! He tends to ramble on random tangents that make you wonder why you came to class that day but he is really nice.

Really friendly and approachable prof. He's a bit scatter-brained with the structure of the class (revised the syllabus like 3 times). Sometimes it was hard to keep up with the class because there were a lot of readings or he doesn't keep class on time.
