Great guy, kinda tough class. Didn't think it would be as hard as it was. Personally as someone who typically gets A-/A on papers, I thought he graded hard and got lower than usual scores on my paper. Lectures sometimes focused on things that weren't important to the course (like over-explaining of certain topics) and lots of PAPERS!

Joe is not nice. he is very rude and crass. i took his night class and it was awful. he just talked for 3 hours straight with one 10 minute break. no one can pay attention for that long, everyone in the class was on social media or asleep. i had a great TA so that helped but i would never take Joe again

Very thorough lectures. Inspiring, and even funny at times. He works hard to make sure the concepts sink in properly. If you have the choice, choose him. Do the reading. And show up. You won't be disappointed.

Gerteis is a really nice guy. His lectures are pretty interesting and you can tell he knows what he is talking about. The TAs do most of the grading so build up a good relationship with them and you'll be fine. Take good notes and read the book and test should be manageable

Honestly, your opinion on this class is going to depend on your TA, as they grade the papers that are worth the largest part of the grade. Joe's lectures were good, and I found him to be a very interesting professor. We didn't have large exams, weekly quizzes instead, which greatly reflect how much you read and pay attention in class--so do both.

It's a good class. The professor does a very good job explaining the lectures and lectures are easy to follow. The quizzes are out of lecture, so attend lecture daily. The quizzes get hard sometime, but its all multiple choice.

Made sure everyone in our small honors class understood each concept before moving on to the next topic. Sometimes his explanations were a bit confusing/off-topic to what the student was asking but in general he was very helpful. Tests were moderate in difficulty, although I did only skim the textbook by the end of the semester.

I've had Joe from Intro Soc to my Major Seminar. He's very approachable and cares about the outcomes of our work. In 4966w I liked that he made the work truly relevant; no busywork. He's a no crap prof tho, so do your readings and pay attention. He's not the most engaging during lecture, but is a quality lecturer with perspectives I appreciated.

Does not help all groups in class. Speaks mainly to the kids who are on track and leaves the others that are behind to fail. Not patient when meeting with kids. Unclear expectations. Changing due dates. Unwilling to work with students who need to negotiate dates. Poor office hour times, unwilling to meet outside of times.

He lectured and was sometimes interesting. Pretty much what you'd expect for an intro class. His tests were refreshingly well written, for multiple choice.

Extremely boring lecture style. Literally, power point slide after power point slide with one to two sentences on each that he whips through very quickly and doesn't explain. Went in for office help and he provided 0 assistance. Just read the book.

I thought Prof Gerteis was a great guy. Easy to talk to, easy to listen to, and very knowledgeable. Discussions were a piece of cake and easy points. Just a tip: I read the book & made flashcards and I got an A on every test. It's not hard if you study and pay attention.

He is a wonderful teacher. I was a little worried about how hard this class would be but as long as you go to all his lectures, the and comprehension of the material is very clear. He is a fair grader and gives you the questions to the tests before so you have time to get the right answers. I highly recommend this teacher!

Personable guy, but tends to go on random, rambling tangents... Tests were horribly put together; no study guides, very precise and difficult questions... Definitely not an easy prof.

Comment:
Took Gerteis for Soc 3701 with less than 5 classes left before graduation. His lectures are exceptionally dry and, as I found out later, he's the only professor to use the texts he does. The coupling of his less-than-interesting oratory skills and sad choice of texts take what should be a very interesting course and makes it a case in torture. Sitt
