Begins each film screening with a very informative short lecture, afterward it opens up to discussion. Does a lot to increase your appreciation for a wide range of films, likes to pick films that aren't usually taught in intro classes. Don't take it expecting an easy A, you have to do the work and put in the time, but it's fun.

I actually audited her summer History of Silent Film class (25a?b?). It was wonderful. The films were great and well-selected. Her lectures were smart, thought-provoking, and engaging. Really, she's the bees knees. Super sweet and brilliant. I can't vouch for her grading, but she seems fair and eager for her students to do well. Take her!!

Lecture is used for film viewings which is pretty cool. Goes through the early beginnings of cinema to contemporary. Grade is based solely on GSI, so hopefully you good a good one. Most of the GSIs take the class very seriously and grade accordingly.

Comment:
The material in the class is not interesting unless you are really excited about cinema. She focuses on a theme which guides the course (i.e. Spring 09 was "The Child In Cinema") Overall, the grading is harder than would be expected and the GSIs take their job way too seriously. She is a nice person, but avoid the class.

I took Hitchcock with her and it was one of my favorite classes at Cal. Class is interesting, you almost feel like you're not going to class at all. She's not an easy grader tho, I got a B and I swore I was well on my way to an A. Your paper must be "original" and fresh to get an A. It's hard to pull this off since Hitchcock is studied by everyone.

Marilyn is one of the sweetest teaches I've had at Berkeley. She cares a lot about the students and is very easy going, She lets you come up with your own topics for papers so that you can write about what interests you. I really enjoyed learning about the silent film era and Marilyn enjoys teaching it. The tests are kind of hard so keep up!

Avant Garde is hard to approach for most, and Fabe realized this. She made it a fun experience and helped enjoy some of the more tedious out-there films. She is a wonderful professor who made the final really easy going with here and there extra credit projects and other fun stuff.

A really interesting class....my two favorite films that we watched in class were Sunset Blvd. and Singin in the Rain. It's kind of hard to get an A, unless you know everything, but I did way way better than I expected. So you can def pull in a B+/A- if you try hard enough.

Excellent professor! Really opened my eyes to the nuances of cinema. Unfortunately, it seems she doesn't know very much about modern film.

This was one of the best classes I've taken at Berkeley. Isn't difficult at all, but it does challenge you to look beyond the obvious. Prof. Fabe is v nice, excellent lecturer. The films she picked when I took the class (sp 05) were awesome: Rashomon, Mulholland Dr., Lady From Shanghai, etc. Highly recommended for anyone.

Marilyn's way into film which made for some good discussions. Usually she could only manage to spark them with community members though. For some reason the students stayed silent. Plus, it's really your GSI that matters in this class, since Marilyn doesn't do much except pick the movies.

One of the best instructors in the film dept. Her enthusiasm and knowledge bring a good deal to her entertaining lectures. Marilyn knows her stuff. Always enourages questions and comments during lecture. Class grade usually based on midterm, paper, and a final. One of best instructors in film dept.

Fabe's class is relatively simple, she doesn't take roll and you can easily pass w/out doing the reading. Can be a little dry if you aren't interested in the class subject. She is very nice though and more than willing to help.
