Comment:

The professor who's changed me the most. I took her Surrealism course, and while other professors will perhaps be more beloved, she makes you work harder and improve more than any other. Has said she "does not look for IQ, but for EQeffort quotient," and stresses hard work, planning, and dedication. You might not get an A, but will become better.

mediocre prof, good advisor. you have to seek her out though--set up meetings, email relentlessly, etc. BUT she will give you great advice/career guidance. In her element leading summer interns at Williamson gallery which I cannot recommend enough--you'll learn a ton about the art world! she's a great ally but you have to seek out her mentorship

terrible. not supportive and very unhelpful. incredibly forgetful. flat out rude and mean to students for no apparent reason. do not take a class with her.

Comment:

Had her for Dada & Surrealism. She's helpful if you look for it, and an easy grader. She also knows the material really well. However, she does little to keep the class interesting or motivate you as a student beyond presenting the material, so if you don't love the subject, DO NOT take her class. The assignments were kind of cool though.

Comment:

This is an amzing class and actually got me into an art history major. MacNaughton knows a lot about Dada and Surrealism and will help you if you go into her office but she is kind of hard to get ahold of. She is a hard grader on the beginning papers but easier on the final. She can be condescending at times but it's really intended to push you!

I actually found her lectures interesting, the readings great, and all you have to do is show up at her office hours once to be on her good side. I like her because she has done her research and expects the same from her students. She's also more in touch with the world than other professors at Scripps, and it's funny to hear some of her stories.

took surrealism b/c of perez de mendiola (best prof ever) and regretted it every day of the semester b/c of macnaughton. she seems to have contempt for the students, as if we were brats intruding on her elitist art world and we obviously knew nothing. plus it was a one day a week class--she was so boring, those were the longest hours of my life

She is intimidating and yes she is an art snob but you will get out of her whatever you yourself put in. If you make a little effort she is incredibly nice and helpful. She expects a lot but you will also learn more than in any other class.

Memorable four years later for the amazing amount of knowldege she drilled into me. Very challeging and brilliant. I don't care that she wasn't my best friend; she was a great teacher.

Very cold and impersonal, takes no notice when students have fallen behind or are obviously in need of help. Lectures are dry and boring, even when the topic alone should spice things up.
