I took Dr. Horn for Intro to American Politics & it was a great class! We never had pop quizzes, & if you study for the two tests & final you do have, you should be fine. He doesn't tell you exactly what to study, but advises you to read the chapters. I always studied practice test & vocabulary terms & listened in lectures & did well on the tests!

So this class in particular is a dry one for most people, but Dr. Horn tries to add some humor here and there. If you do the work, he grades pretty leniently. However, tests are a pain and are most of the grade.

This class is a nightmare. The tests are all cumulative, so if you dont understand something you're in trouble. Horn isnt accessible outside of class- his office hrs were 2 hours twice a week, and he never agreed to anything scheduled outside of those, so I had to skip other classses for it. He didnt give actual help, just vague tips.

Dr. Horn is one of the punniest professors at Samford. He is a nice and funny prof, I enjoyed taking his class. If you understand the material that he presents you should do fine on his tests. Each week you have a current events essay which is a definite grade booster. He will pretty much hold you the full amount of class time; but it is worth it.

Horn sure is a professor. I don't mind his class, but it can be frustrating when studying because he gives you no warning on lecture:reading ratio, or what he expects for essays. You will write a one page essay every week on current events, which can be a pain, but they are a solid way to keep grades up. He has a weird thing for statistics .

Dr. Horn seems like a tough professor at first, and his humor is sometimes to understand, but he is pretty laid back. As long as you show up to class and make an effort, you will do fine. I thought he was a pretty easy grader and his Methods class was the first Political Science class I took at Samford. Highly recommend!

This class will scare some students away from the political science department. This class will ruin your GPA even though it's not supposed to be difficult. Very sarcastic, vague, dry-humored teacher who expects everybody in the class to get things so quickly. Gives you zero helpclues about what will be on testsquizzes. Worst class I've had @ SU.

Comment:
This methods class was a complete joke. He makes it way harder than it needs to be. There are only 2 tests, neither of which he prepares you for. Quizzes and tests are crapshoots and guessing games because he doesn't say at all what will be on them. Very sarcastic teacher. Tries to be funny but isn't. Makes you feel dumb for not knowing an answer.

Methods was always a guessing game. Professor Horn was never clear about what exactly he wanted & would often change what he wanted or add something at the last min. Doesn't follow his syllabus or his percentage breakdown. Also didn't know what 12 of my grade was going into the final. Terrible teacher who makes you feel dumb when you don't get it.

DO NOT BE FOOLED. Horn likes to crack jokes and not bs the first few days of class. But the second the adddrop period is over, he dives in to the most complicated statistical bull you've ever heard. Nobody has a clue what is going on, and doesn't care about students at all. Good luck, because he's the only teacher and its required for POLS majors

Local & State Government with Horn - 3 tests on blackboard and they all follow the same format: Questions from Microcase ExplorIt quizzes ... then choose 2/3 essay prompts. Very helpful, gave extensions on due-dates if you had good reasons.

Really horrible professor- Easily the worst in the department. Spends more time telling jokes and stroking his own ego than imparting knowledge. I learned more my first year of high school than I did in four of his upper level classes put together. Too much busy work and a harsh bias on final grades. Not at all helpful. He will just waste your time

Great Professor. Some don't like his humor. It is better to do one-page assignments every week than pop quizzes that other professors use. Also, tests are fair, and he is a fair grader. Great classes for people who are willing to put in a little time.

Dr. Horn is the worst prof in the dept. He is not a friendly person, and repeatedly will screw students over at the end of the semester. If you take Dr. Horn, you will have a 2 page essay and 1 page article abstract due everyweek. He is known for busy work.

I love Dr. Horn. At first his humor really fell flat w/ me but after a while I realized he's actually hilarious. Very sarcastic so don't let that throw you off. He's a really nice guy and very helpful if you ask. (GOVT301 isn't really that hard if you study and pay attention!)
