You just need to apply yourself to receive a good grade. She outlines her expectations of you and if you follow those expectations, you will have no problem. Go to class, pay attention, take notes, and work hard-- as you would in any University setting.

Terrible. It's not an understanding of the text but more how well you memorize her phrasing. You use a different word than she used and you get half credit. Just don't..

She tells you what to write about, how to interpret the text, etc., and I can understand why that might annoy some people. However, I enjoyed reading the assigned books and they were pretty easy reads. Memorize what she wants you to memorize for the quizzes. Short essays aren't too bad and I got A's/B's on those. Not a bad class.

Very discouraging teacher: she is right, you are wrong. Wouldn't call it a discussion class all she does is summarize the material, yet attendance is still mandatory and a huge portion of your grade. Rewards grammar over ideas. Don't take her if you enjoy being an English major. You'll get an A if you are a 'favorite' of hers.

Comment:
Not a good English teacher in that to do well, you HAVE to write about what she thinks is right. If you write a good paper about your own different opinion and support it, the highest you can get is a B. Somewhat rude... Suck up to her, pay attention to grammar and you'll do okay (A/B). Wish we could have had classroom discussions. Books are okay.

Horrible teacher, completely inconsistent grader. She crushes intellectual discussion should it ever come up in class and is very disorganized. Her "take home quizzes" are actually surprise essays with almost no notice. For the benefit of your sanity and GPA avoid her like the plague.

Orringer is not clear in the LEAST. She takes roll call and is a very inconsistent grader. She plays favorites, and assigns massive amounts of reading with excessively short notice. Grammar is everything, which is fair, but she gives notes on books and then marks our answers wrong on quizzes.

She is one of the sweetest teachers I have ever had. She is extremely helpful and allows you to redo papers to average a grade together. Yes, she is strict with grammar but she is an english teacher. She is quick to email back to any questions you have and is always willing to help.

Ridiculously picky when it comes to answers on quizzes: make sure you write down what she says WORD FOR WORD in lecture and then regurgitate it back to her on the quiz. Watching movies outside of class was a pain. Be careful what you say in class -- if she doesn't agree with you 100% she'll shut you down. Not the worst prof, but far from best.

She is a horrible teacher! she thinks grammar is the most important thing in life and doesn't even read your papers she just looks for grammar not the ideas you have written. If you go to her for help she is completely useless and will not give you a straight answer. I would never take this class avoid it at all costs!

She quizzes and teaches her own interpretations and is a stickler for grammer like no other. All assignments are the same where you compare a novel to a movie interpretation you have to watch outside of class. I wouldn't really recomend the class.

A stickler for grammar in a freshman english course -- and doesn't believe in rough drafts! Her grading seemed subjective -- make sure you show up and speak out. Lecture is a bit boring, usually she just goes through the reading and points out significant ideas. Had us watch a lot of movies outside of class, which was inconvenient.

I took two of her classes in the semester. She does page by page and tells you what is important, which just happens to end up on her quizes. Write and underline these things in your book!
