Comment:

Dr. Ruétalo is an excellent professor. She was very knowledgeable about the subject matter, well organised with her lectures, encouraged her students to participate in class discussions. She gave good feedback on class assignments which helped me improve both my Spanish writing and speaking skills. Her exams and marking were also fair.

Comment:

This is a highly recommended class. Victoria is an amazing prof, who cares about her students and has such an amazing personality. Her expectations are very clear and reasonable. Just show up to class, make sure to watch the movies and complete the few readings. She notices if you put effort and it makes the class much more enjoyable. Love her !

Comment:

Dr. Ruetalo was disorganized and unclear about class objectives. There was more value in separate group discussions, but they were a rare occurrence. There was uncertainty in what was expected, which might have been caused by Dr. Ruetalo setting out marking schemes but the TA marking (which, on top of everything, HORRIFIC! TERRIBLE TA!!)

Classes were very hard to follow. Her notes were scattered and confusing, and her lectures were dry and dull. She also expects a lot of work: 2 midterms, 3 papers, 2 presentations, a weekly 500 word contribution to the forum and participation in class.

Comment:

Pretty awful class- don't recommend it for non-native speakers. She expects people to read the text, keep up with eclass notes, participate weekly on a forum (5%) and participate actively in class discussions (10%). She marks fairly easily but I felt constantly behind and felt like I should focus at least an hour a day on this class to succeed.

My favourite prof I've ever had. She is very helpful if you want to improve and try hard. I've taken many classes with her and loved every one of them. She marks very fairly and consistently. I always know what to expect in her class. Overall an absolutely excellent professor! She has encouraged me to push myself to get better at spanish

Victoria seems like a really nice lady, but her class was very dry. She gives zero notes, and for non-native speakers it is nearly impossible to take notes and follow discussion at the same time. She doesn't have much consideration for non-native speakers, which was incredibly frustrating. Marking was okay, she seemed to cut us a break there.

Good prof who knew the material. Lectures could be a little boring, but the material is very cool and the assignments were fun to write. She marks generously. Read the textbook and come to class with questions and you'll enjoy the class, and the prof, much more.

Good prof to have if you have other classes that are too stressful. She expects you to do readings, exam questions were not a surprise, giving marker, very straightforward. Subject is very interesting and she is very knowledgable, but she does seem a little detatched. Doesn't seem approachable until she's in her office, then she's super nice.

I have never learned so much...from Wikipedia! Victoria doesn't teach the material well, nor does she seem interested in it. Class discussions were painful. And who teaches using Wikipedia on a regular basis?! seriously...

You are spoonfed the information via boring lecturing, using power point under a pretense of "interactive teaching". A bit outdated. I agree, I could have stayed home. Nice person, I am sure, not approachable as a teacher.

Sometimes being overly knowledgeable in your field hinders your ability to teach...this is one. She made me feel so bad about myself, my writing & my understanding of concepts. She is totally not approachable. I would never EVER take a class with her again. I felt so defeated in that class, its not worth the stress. So pointless. Didnt learn much.

She knows her stuff. She focuses alot on placing the films within their historical, political and soclal climates/ periods. The films were fantastic, and if you do the readings and attend you'll pass. Pretty easy marker.

Wow, this prof does not want to be here. Se has no passion for anything dicussed in class, nor does she know the current status of any topic. I learned more from the Colombian student in class than anything that came out of her. Great topics discussed and very easy, Victoria is just really boring. Read the text tho, its a good one.
