It's either a hit or miss with this guy. I personally really liked him because he always had something interesting to say and he gives amazing feedback if you ask for it. You really get out of it what you put into it so if you're lazy don't take him.

So I get 72% on my paper. So me not understanding how looks and he says poor writing. What did I do wrong he says not to use this word and keep it in the present tense like 4 times and then says for a few sentences to rephrase when they sound good. So I don't get how with few comments I get that grade. Be prepared to not understand why it is bad.

Lectures are a little boring but that's expected for EN125. Sometimes he goes off topic and tells stories if we ask. He looks to improve your writing and he's a super interesting dude to say the least.

The syllabus makes absolutely no sense, due dates were all wrong, the guidelines for the class do not make any sense. as for the class itself, he can be rude and make students in the class look bad, I did all of the readings, no spark notes and was fine in that aspect of the class, just everything else about him.

Told the class that attendance was optional and he did not care, but docked grades for attendance. Was disrespectful and rude to non-english majors who didn't understand the extremely complex readings. Disrespectful on a personal level.

I took this class to get a core credit. I actually ended up enjoying it. The professor is a one-of-a-kind type of guy. He likes to give many chances to succeed. I never personally had any issues with him or his grading. He was always fair and you always knew what he was looking for on tests. Really a fun guy. Going to this class didn't even pain me

All the negative whiny comments on here are probably from Marketing majors who thought they could coast through reading CliffNotes. Oops. If you truly couldn't stand Macaskill's class, you probably shouldn't be an English major. Brilliant, polarizing, scandalizing, he's truly one of a kind. Ask him to tell the goat story.

Do not take this class. It was the most pointless class I have ever taken in my life. He doesn't teach you anything. He just rambles on about other things not related to the class.

I don't mind anyone on the "crazier" end of the spectrum, but at times he was sexist and inappropriate during discussions. He doesn't seem to mind making students feel unintelligent, or even ridiculous, during discussions for having aesthetic positions that differ from his own. I appreciated his metaphors, however, and he pushed critical thinking.

macaskill is literally the most awesome professor not an easy class, but the man just rocks at life he's so smart, and he doesn't limit discussion topics or mince words someone would want to date

Very intelligent and knows his stuff. Come to class 110% prepared, or face embarrassment like I did. He has no problem with calling people out on their deficiencies, in front of everyone. Make a buddy with a classmate who knows their stuff. I asked for help from him, and he instead referred me to another student- twice.

Material is way over everyone's head. Expects us to be able to read a quote and know which of the 8 books we had to read it came from. Grades papers ridiculously hard. Don't take. A good portion of the class is dropping because he just told us about an 8 page paper due in a week.

Probably the best teacher I have ever had at Carroll. He is very eloquent and quirky which brings a twist to the regular lectures of other teachers. He teaches you HOW to read which has truthfully opened up my mind and strengthened my skills. You also learn so much about the world, great class (African Philosophy) probably would take it again!

Not everyone belongs in college. If you can't appreciate Mac's quirky style, charismatic approach, and unique brand of brilliance, then just switch courses and log back in to facebook. Macaskill is a genuine person, helpful, yet refreshingly unpredictable. One of my favorite profs. Lazy, typical-undergrads just along for the ride will not get it.

An excellent professor - one of the best at JCU, by far. A brilliant and careful reader, Macaskill opens his students up to entirely new ways of looking at and thinking about literature. A JCU education without one (or more) of his courses would be, it seems to me, incomplete.

Eccentric, enigmatic, crazy...totally worth the trip!! Dr.Macaskill made me look at literature in a way I never had before. Expect long, sometimes tedious lectures and very few grades -but pay attention, and you will gain something valuable. Also expect lots of talks about goats, hermaphroditism, and his virility. COETZEEEE

there's a side to lit untouched by most other professors at jcu & macaskill offers it. a lot of students don't like it because frankly it's over most of their heads. if you want to spend your u-grad days fawning over the same trite english lit topics, take someone else. if you want your interest renewed and belong in college, take macaskill.
