Dr. Helms makes a really daunting class manageable and interesting. He responds to emails very quickly and has office hours where you can meet directly with him to get questions answered. He does a really good job of explaining his lectures. His tests can be difficult but all the questions are fair based on what he has taught in class. Take him!

Helms is intimidating, and every other review makes him sound horrible. He is a tough professor, but it's because he truly wants you to succeed in orgo. His office hours are a little scary, but he that because he wants you to find the answer yourself and not just be handed them. Definitely recommend for orgo1. I'm taking him again for 2 next sem.

Gives pop quizzes, and holds them over your head like a threat. Must do textbook readings every night, and expects you do to every practice question in book. Very un-encouraging professor. Always makes jokes about how if we make tiny mistakes, real scientists would laugh us out of the room. Creates a very difficult learning environment

Dr. Helms is a really great teacher and will help you thoroughly understand the material of you put the work in. His tests are difficult but homework give you an idea of what to expect for them, and he'll go over stuff with you really thoroughly in office hours if you need! I'd definitely recommend taking him.

Honestly the hardest teacher I have ever had. He flies through his lectures and expects you to know everything. If you ask him questions he will literally not help you and just try and point you in the right direction because he thinks it will help even though it does not at all. Just save yourself the grade and the trouble and don't take him!!!

Flies through his slides like his life depends on it and then assigns the last 20 minutes to do group work problems which he never actually gives you the answers to. If you ask a question he won't answer it, he'll just answer with another question. This is coming from a student with straight A's so it's not like I'm just not grasping the material

Dr. Helms is honestly an amazing professor. That being said, he's also very difficult. If you're willing to put the time in, you can do well and actually learn the material. He's super accessible outside of class, as he's got tons of office hours and will make time if you email him. Just be ready to work, his tests and homework are really hard

pre med? don't bother with helms. you should try to get the best grade that you can in organic, which will be a lot harder in his class than in others. Gives no curve, even though exams and homeworks are arguably harder than those given by other professors. Yes, you'll learn a ton, but take it with someone who is not cruel.

Condescending professor that made me hate everything to do with the subject. No amount of studying can make you leave a test feeling confident you did well. He was good at explaining the material but was intimidating in office hours and his tests were just ridiculous.

He is a very good and helpful teacher but boy is he tough. If you had a hard time with organic I, I'd recommend taking it with someone else. But he is a very good teacher and is willing to help you out, but it's definitely not an easy class.

Very good teacher, very smart guy. He is very hard, he makes up for it though. If you listen to what he tells you to do to prep for a test, you will do well. Also gives a lot more work than the other teachers

Helms is a very intelligent man. His lectures are very clear and easy to follow and if you don't understand things still, he has an unbelievable amount of office hours. Tests are very hard, you need to study a lot. If I can get an A, so can you.

Helms is by far the hardest orgo professor. His tests are very tough and he assigns a lot of homework. But, he's a great lecturer, and he's brilliant. His class made me love chemistry when I hated it in high school.

He's smart and all, but only if you can overcome his **** attitude enough to absorb anything he's saying. He made me hate my favorite science. He enjoys talking about things that'll give you cancer. By the end of class, you'll think that sounds like a good idea.

I STRONGLY recomend him. He is BRILLIANT and is a fantastic lecturer. He is very clear as to what he expects and wants on tests. People try and avoid him because his tests are "hard", I'm not a great chem student, but his tests were fair and kind of easy, the practice tests are very simular to the actuale tests. OWLs for HW are NOT hard nor do they

Excellent professor! Brings in outside information in lectures to make material more relevant. Supplemental instruction, tutoring, and office hours are available. Tests are tough but not surprising, as is homework. Do as he suggests and do a little OWL every day. Orgo is demanding, but Helms made me enjoy it. Taking Orgo 2 with him next semester.

This class is very hard but Helms is a fun guy. Make sure you have a full understanding of the procedure before going to lab. His pre-lab lecture will make the experiment very intimidating, which scares you into not making mistakes
