The class itself is relatively easy. Your final grade consists of a few intermittent assignments and a few bigger paper papers. I didn't find him to be an especially interesting, let alone inspiring, teacher. He doesn't like slacking. He is also quite supportive of individual students and their creative efforts. Overall, the class is OK.

If you're wrong he'll say so, if you slack like I did he'll call you out. He's like Gordon Ramesy but in a great way. When I asked for extra help or extensions he still gave me a ton of help outside class. He'll rub some people the wrong way but I got it eventually. It was tough love. If you buy into it you'll get a lot out of it. Much respect

I just finished the 3-week section and it was TOUGH but WORTH IT. Fun but challenging assignments. I missed some deadlines but emailed the prof and he was cool about it. My brain hurts in a good way.

I asked alot of people about this class and everyone said it was great. I'm not a good writer and some assignments were confusing so I emailed him constantly w questions. He answered right away w helpful suggestions. Great guy, cool class. I got a A-. I dont get the complaints below at all. I'm super confident about writing now thanks to Melbye.

No matter how hard you try, he will do nothing but criticize your work. Even the best writers will receive a terrible grade.

He assigned some interesting readings. However, I am not good at being the recipient of criticism as I have been a poet for more than half my life, and can actually make words rhyme and flow. Seemed like he nit picked over little things. Then I began to wonder how much one can really critique a personal creation.

Average at best; taking a writing class online can be challenging due to uncertainty in the electronic exchange of required writings; final exam is worth almost 50% of the course grade. So, you're never sure exactly where you stand in the class as far as the final grade goes until the final is graded. Plus, very subjective grading

Mr. Melbye's class was the easiest I've ever taken, yet I learned a lot. Sometimes his directions/emails didn't make sense, but you'll get an A anyway. Papers are maximum a three pages for 3 out of 4 total, and all very simple and easy to get a good grade on, yet they make you think. Easiest A+ EVER.

I loved Melbye. He was an awesome teacher and I actually learned a lot from him. I enjoyed going to class because of him! He's a fair grader, and you have multiple papers in this class that could challenge you, but I liked that. He's a very funny and personable guy that will help you with anything.

Assignments can be a bit wack at times; sometimes you'll go two weeks without homework then get an assignment that takes two-three hours to complete mindfully. YOU GET OUT OF THIS CLASS WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT, even more than other college courses. Some of the readings were slightly wack too, would've rather read DFW or Whitman than Dark Water

Melbye was a wonderful teacher. He is very well educated about his subject and does a great job getting students excited about creative writing. There is not a huge workload involved in his class, but the few assignments he does assign do take a good amount of effort. He doesn't grade very hard though. Overall, a very good class.

Dr. Melbye was WONDERFUL! He's so intelligent! He's very laid back, but very intersting, and you can tell he understands you. If you like writing, you'll love this class. Even if you don't, he's a cool professor and it's easy to take something away from his class, just about how to think about life in general, not just writing. Will take him again!

Eric is one of the very best cw professors on any of the Miami campuses. If you're serious about wanting to become a more skilled writer, take him. Make sure you show up, do your readings/writing and stay on track because he won't let a class walk on him.
