Comment:

Honestly, as long as you put effort in the midterms and prepare decently for the midterm, this class should be fine. The TAs are there to help and are excellent at explaining things. I went into the course knowing just the basic syntax of Java and I still got an A.

Comment:

Very unfair marking on midterm and final. They were both very straightforward to do but he gave no marks unless you wrote specifically what he wanted. The assignments were very very vague and he did not clear it up unless you asked the teaching assistant. Lectures were a joke and not worth going to at all.

Comment:

Way too unfair. His assignments are difficult. When I wrote the midterm I thought it was fairly straightforward and easy, but when I got it back I saw how hard he marked. When I asked him for help he is often rude and provides only short, curt responses. He is NOT beginner friendly and seems to like seeing his students fail.

Comment:

Been at McMaster for about 6 years. He's the absolute worst, and I'm not exaggerating. Obscure assignments which are not quite helpful for people who have been coding for only a little while. He comes from a math-heavy background so maybe he just assumes everyone can just grasp anything.

This class is best learned without the professor. Read the textbook and use Google. The assignments had a gigantic leap in difficulty with relatively little explanation and an unfair marking scheme (30% for test cases!?). Any clarification asked for was met with "Ask a TA" or "Google it", which is fine if he had instructed properly to begin with

Comment:

Lectures are absolutist useless, and that's really all I can say about them. As for assignments, the instructions are either nonsensical or instruct you to do something that makes absolutely no sense, things that if anyone with a programming job did, would be fired immediately. He teaches horrible programming habits and grades far too harshly.

Comment:

Just because programming isn't confusing enough already, Carette works extra hard to make sure you wont get it. Some lectures will be somewhat relevant and others are a complete waste of time, where he debugs the code he was "Positive was going to compile". And just remember that if you understand his assignments at first, you're doing them wrong!

He's successfully made me hate programming. Can't teach for the life of him, and thinks he's being clever by trying to make assignments "easier" for us, but instead makes them more difficult. He can't even write assignment instructions properly. I suggest to avoid him at all costs, and if you have him... good luck.

One of the worst, most unorganized profs you will ever have in your life. He will probably make you hate programming. Arrogant and makes the course material 100 times less interesting than it has to be. Assignments are confusing and half the time he doesn't know what he's doing.

Assignment instructions are terrible. Waits fro people to complain on discussion boards then responds in a very condescending way. TEEERRRRIBBLE lecturer. Stutters and gets nervous. Does not outline what is going to be on tests and his tests are very hard. He should not be here.
