Speaks in riddles and indirectly. Only occasionally answers questions in class. Not specific in lecture but VERY in the tests. Not good with neurodiverse students. Not very helpful outside of class

I never post these but had to respond to these ratings?? Dr Schmitz is not unfair. Yes, she has ideas about the content she teaches, but she is primarily interested in helping students learn to think. If you take this class for a grade you won't get anything from it. Do the work, let yourself listen, and you will get more from this class than an A.

I took this because I had to & I wanted an easy A & this is that class. But as a professor, shes all over the place in teaching & the material is weird & what she thinks is 'art' blinds her to the fact that students do crap projects and call it art just to get an A. For a project a kid stood with a trumpet (not playing it) for 5 min and got an A.

Dr. Schmitz, notorious for being the "mean" and "hard" theater professor, is not bad at all. She does not like people who are not scholars- meaning she doesn't tolerate people who don't put in 100%. As long as you do the readings and write down everything (trust me), you will be fine. She is always fast with emails!

Comment:
Incredibly passive aggressive. It's like communicating with a junior high student. No matter how much effort you put in she lives to make students feel small. Is selfish, does not consider students feelings or opinions. She is very smart and exposed me to a lot, but at the cost of dealing with her terrible people skills it's not worth it.

She doesn't usually have very organized lectures and wastes a lot of time. Is very available for help but it isn't usually all that helpful. It's hard to tell what she's thinking and sometimes explodes at a comment one day she literally laughed at the day before. Learn to tailor your writing to her. I'll never take a class of hers again willingly.

Comment:
She's very abstract in many of her lectures. Does not give good examples, and whenever you feel like you're understanding the lesson, she changes it and you're confused all over again. She's not very consistent and is not clear with expectations. I'm not planning on taking a class with her again if I can help it.

Comment:
I took Schmitz for an HONS 320 course. She had a passion for theatre but was not a good teacher. She was extremely vague and talked around questions a lot. Talked down to students at times. Very unresponsive to questions. She lost multiple assignmentsemails. Unless you have a passion for artstheatre, I do not recommend this professor.

I'm not an abstract thinker but she made a point to help me understand the material. I took the three hour class and hardly ever had outside work. Quick response to e-mail. Make sure to talk to her ahead of time if you plan to miss lecture. She will work with you.

Doesn't care for laziness. Show up and take good notes. Her lessons are abstract, but never thrown together. She will point out what will be on the tests and communicates well with students. If you're confused about anything, she is very accessible by email.

If your a theater major you have to take this class with her. There are no other professors who teach this class. She may give out a lot of work but as long as you apply yourself you should do fine. Switch on your brain as she says.

Attendance is VERY important. If you miss one class, you'll be lost. She only lectures on what will be on tests, she does not try to trick you with information. Tests and quizes are straightforward, if you go to class and take notes you will pass. I absolutely loved her even though many did not.

She may be one of the most educated professors in the theater department. She knows her stuff but has a hard time communicating it, you have to really want to learn to understand the course. You can have your own opinion abut the plays, but it needs to be an educated opinion. Respect her and she will respect you. I learn and retained so much.

I had a great time in her class. You will never know what to expect in her class. Her assignments can be a little tough, but she is very helpful if you ask for help. If you want an easy class don't take her, but if you want a fun and excellent teacher take Schmitz.

She is a great professor for people who want a taste of what college will really be like. She doesn't give weak assignments like a lot of 100 level teachers, so don't take this class if you're expecting an easy A. And go to her office hours! (She's super helpful if you give a little effort!)

Comment:
She is not an easy professor nor are her classes, despite being theater. If you do not want to work for your grade, do not take her class. That being said, if you are capable of applying yourself and you have a genuine interest in theater, you could hardly find a more knowledgeable professor on campus.
