Comment:

Professor Burgess cares a lot about theater but he isn't a good teacher. Do not take this class unless you're willing to put in outside work. His lectures will not cover any test materials. He mainly shows videos and talks about UTC theater. This class is hard if you don't have a background of theatre. Take online if possible.

I really liked this class. A lot of people don't take it seriously but if you actually try you can get an A. Don't take this class if you have zero interest in theatre. His test can sometimes be tough but there usually is a curve. I would definitely take a class from him again.

Worst class Ive ever taken. He is absolutely no help. Doesn't give study guides and his tests come straight out of the test book. You have no idea what your even supposed to be studying for because he doesn't tell you. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He's also incredibly boring and lectures about material you don't even need to know. Terrible teacher.

DO NOT take this class. He does not help you AT ALL. When you ask you a question instead of guiding you he makes you feel dumb, and he never really helps you. He gets mad when students don't pass his test but he isn't willing to give study guide. It is a very pointless class and if you have to take it, choose a different professor.

Burgess was not what I had hoped he would be. He gives long lectures speaking about stuff that you never see on the test. The tests are straight from the textbooks; his lectures... Are not. He got really upset when a lot of people failed his test (duh they failed) and hasn't actually taught a lecture since. DO NOT TAKE HIM.

For a fine arts class, he is a very strict grader. No study guides, no text book use in class and no mercy when writing opinionated papers. He offers a total of 50 points extra credit that requires you to go buy play tickets and answer questions about it. That's it. Rather you are majoring in art or just need a fine arts class, Do NOT take him!!!!

Do Not Have This Guy For Your Professor!!! He doesn't give study guides. He expects you to read several chapters and do great on his exams. On his papers, he doesn't give grades higher than a 7 out of 10. On blackboard, he doesn't post any grades the entire semester. If you expect this class to be a grade booster, it's the complete opposite.

If you can, take another teacher. No study guides, tests are impossible to study for, everything must be specific. Papers the highest grades were always a 7/10. Go everyday because he will put stuff on the test that he said in class. He changes the book all the time so don't expect it to help you, the tests are made from his personal expertise.

HIS TESTS ARE CRAZY!! His tests are way to detailed for an introductory class. He will help you but don't take him if you want to be a given an A. I worked my butt off to receive an A. Get someone else if you can

Not a very hands-on class. Lectures were somewhat dry and tedious; the only part when I felt I was learning was the few hours of actual stage work we did. Tests are difficult; you have to make very clear notes and study hard. The class had to ask several times before he would give us a study guide. Overall, try choosing a different teacher.

DO NOT TAKE HIM! His tests are given based on his knowledge of theatre and have nothing to do with the notes or book. His grading is not fair, and his tests are not fair. No papers that you turn in are good enough(7 or 8 out of ten at best)Take an advanced calculus class as an alternate. You'll probably do better in there.

Do not take this professor unless you have to. The test are ridiculously hard for a GenEd Theatre class. I studied and read the chapters and still had no idea what the answers were on the test. He also grades very harshly on the papers... I mean seriously its not an english class! Anyway DO NOT TAKE!

not a GPA booster! grading is unfair, and he has no respect for non THPS students, The entire semester the entire THSP111 page on utconline was empty; no reviews, contact info, ect.. Cant trust him with doctors notes or he will lose it and forget. he is rude if you show any disinterest in the class.

I took this class as a gpa booster, but it did the exact opposite!! His grading system is ridiculous. He expects everyone to theater experts...even though its an intro class!! On my first paper the first week of class, he took off cause he said i had a lot to learn about theater. Duh! That's what I took the class for, to learn about it!

The class is extremely easy... he's the only teacher of this class that doesn' make you read more than one play. He uses movies instead. He says everything AT LEAST 3 times before the review of the test. He is a kinda tough grader on play reviews though. Do the papers and you'll be fine.
