Comment:

Seriously one of my favorite profs at Normandale! She is kind and understanding, but she can be mean if you come in late, etc. Stay on her good side, and she is a great prof. She is very willing to help, so make sure to ask for help if you need it. She is serious and no fluff but seems to enjoy helping students who are engaged. Takes attendance.

Comment:

I took an Intro to Painting class with her. She does a grade job throughly explaining the projects you paint. She knows what she teaches well. She will come around during class time and helpveach painter out individully. It is a great well balanced class. I am definitely coming out of her class a better painter.

Everyone is required to take an art class; however, not everyone is innately exceptional at art like this class requires. Showing up everyday and putting in maximum effort is simply not enough to receive an A in this class. This was the hardest earnedB I have ever received. My contempt for art was further substantiated after taking this class.

Comment:

An intro to art class shouldnt be prepared like a majors class because all kinds of students take it. Not just art majors. The busy work is annoying. Its a four hour class with minimum four hours of homework that you basically have to use studio for. Most should be integrated into the class instead but again, she treats it like a majors class.

Comment:

Karen is a very caring, understanding teacher who wants all students to do well. She talks with each student individually during class to make sure they're learning the drawing techniques and to answer any questions. She grades based on effort. If you're bad at drawing, as long as you try you will get a decent grade!

Don't take her class, her lectures are so boring its painful. She gets VERY off topic and no matter how much effort you put into your painting it is never enough for her. She often forgets her class isn't professional painters. Rude at times and homework heavy for a painting class. SAVE YOURSELF. DON'T TAKE HER.

She's very sweet but seems judgmental at times because she will just stare at you. Feedback is pretty good but class feels terribly long and lectures are incredibly boring to listen to. She gets very off topic and assign busy work like 3 or 4 different color scales besides from painting. Homework each week. Don't get the book she will even say so.

I absolutely loved Karen. She's a very knowledgeable artist and an excellent teacher. She gives constructive criticism, is very reasonable, and spends plenty of time with each student. 10/10

This was a painting class. She offered advice for improvements that did not feel judgmental, only kind and constructive. Usually will ask if you have questions or if you want any advice before giving any. Teaches many good techniques but also allows students to experiment and express their own style within assignments. Lots of fun, easy going class

Karen is a great professor. She is very clear on what she wants from each project and is great at giving advice if you can't understand a concept. The lectures can drag on at times, but overall they are helpful to reference when you start drawing projects.

despite my effort to come to class with a positive attitude this professor is slowly draining my passion to paint! She's a tough grader, doesn't take extra effort into account if you lack natural talent, is rude, and short with students. I would not retake this class if she paid me!

This class was challenging but I thoroughly enjoyed it. She was very clear and had well prepared drawing activities each class and I felt I learned a lot. I have a lot of respect for her and she is very kind to students. Grading is prompt and you know exactly what is expected of you.

I made the mistake of going in to this class with the mind set that it would be an easy A to fulfill my art credit. She takes it very seriously but also understands that art is not something you become good at overnight. Most of the assignments were very time consuming and technique was extremely important. Be prepared to put a lot in to it.

Karen is an amazing professor. I was intimidated by this class, but if you put in the effort, she does everything she can to make you the best painter you can possibly be. She even put a lot of effort into facilitating learning for the students who weren't putting in the time or developing their skills as much. She grades harshly, but she's fair.

Karen is FABULOUS. Her assignments are clear not only in terms of what is expected of you, but also how it is designed to help building your understanding of Oil Painting. She provides helpful feedback during class and on projects. If you miss class, you quickly fall behind especially if you are not diligent about coming to work in the studio.

Comment:

She was a pretty good teacher, but strict. Talking was not allowed while drawing, and attendance is very mandatory. It is easy if you pay attention and go to every class, if you miss a few, it is very hard to make up the work.

Comment:

I found her to be a rather average art teacher and I think she took herself a little too seriously. She was the only professor I've had in college that would actually scold you for being late or not attending class. While I did find some of her tips to be helpful, most of them just annoyed me. Not the most open minded art teacher out there.
