For christs sake, never take a class with Dr. Bauer. Please take me seriously when I say Dr. Bauer is the worst professor I have ever had in my four years of university. She believes her course is the only course you are taking and expects your writing to be up to par with pretty much Shakespeare level complexity. She has a God complex and is rude

Dr. Bauer was highly condescending and can hardly be considered a teacher when she refuses to facilitate critical thinking and discourse in her class. I felt like she mistook teaching for a chance to take out her stress on students. All I learned was that she has a god-complex. Unprofessional. Unacceptable. Avoid her classes at all cost!

Dr. Bauer could very well be the most challenging professor I've had at ECU. You will learn so much about Southern Literature, but she will make you put in a LOT of effort. Overall, very knowledgeable but treats the class as if it's one of the only ones you will take for the whole semester.

I respect her as a contributor to the study of English literature, but her grading criteria is completely unrealistic. If you are not good at heavily analyzing literature, I would highly advise that you stay away from her class; she will expect you to write as if it was being submitted to her literary journal.

If you want someone who is going to talk down instead of teach, this is her. She teaches the readings that she herself has analyzed. She told my class that she told another author that his story behind the book was WRONG. She's nice but doesn't care you have other classes and won't really help you learn.

By far the best professor I've had so far. Her tests all have 4 short answer essays, but she gives great feedback and she gives you a chance to revise one answer after your test has been graded. She also does review before test day. Discussion heavy. Participation isn't mandatory but it does help you understand the text and do well on tests.

Worst professor I've had in 4 years at ECU. Lets just say there was not a Male student in the class with over a C. I knew there was extensive reading but I can assure you that no matter how well you comprehend the books you've read, your answers will not meet her grading standards on the rubric. Made A's in 1100 and 1200 which I took the prior year

DO NOT TAKE HER! I have made all A's and B's throughout college until her. She is completely concerned with herself and publishing her books. Her grading is insane. She treats students who work twice as hard and spend several days in her office worse than students who don't even care. I have had to redo two assignments so far AND am still doing bad

As a dedicated English major, I promise you, this class will exhaust you. I can usually make an A or B in a class, but I had to spend at least 10 hours a week outside of class for this course in order to barely make a B. Her grading is unrealistic and she thinks this is the only class you are taking. The expectations are astronomical.

Hard hard HARD grader. Picks favorites. I have never earned lower than an A on a paper in my life or in an English class and I got a B and 2 C's on my papers. Ended up getting a C in the class. She is ridiculously strict. She's an editor of a journal and grades papers as if they were going to be submitted into that journal. DO NOT TAKE!

I took several of Dr. Bauer's classes and loved all of them. She is a great teacher (one of the best I've had), and a role model for me now when I teach my own classes. She is demanding, but fair and clear in her expectations. Certainly she is concerned with her research, but research is also part of her job as a university professor.
