Comment:
Yes, his teaching style is abrasive & you will have to work ten times harder while oftentimes feeling in over your head. But Mark is a FANTASTIC teacher-scholar &, as noted below, a legend in sociology. His rec. letter essentially got me into one of the top PhD programs in my related field acc. to the chair of the program. Life-changing experience.

Comment:
Hands down to the most underappreciated professor alive. This man is a pure genius, a legend in the field of sociology, and a caring professor that will push you to think harder than you can ever imagine. You will either hate him because of his abrasive teaching style, or love him because he is too brilliant to be true.

He requires an acquired taste. He has a certain unvarnished nature, no doubt, but he is by far the most perspicacious scholar and caring teacher at Haverford. You will have to work, but what you will gain in return is worth it.

He wasn't a good teacher. Smart man-but a poor teacher. He's also just weird. I would call him a know-it-all. I think some people liked him though. Not sure why. I feel like you had to pretend you were really smart to understand what he said.

Mark Gould makes you think and work harder that you ever thought you could, out of sheer respect for his intellect. He can be abraisive about stupidity. Not for the timid or loudly moronic!

Comment:
Mark's courses were the most challenging and interesting I took at Haverford. Both the material he teaches and his analysis of it are complex, yet fascinating. He provides more feedback than any other professor and deeply cares about his students. My writing and analytical skills dramatically improved.

I took lots of classes with gould. It takes time to understand and follow the complexity of the way he speaks/thinks. He is very helpful though. You just can't expect him to dumb anything down. He's a challenge that will dramatically improve the quality of your thinking.

Comment:
Mark is brilliant. However, his thought processes can be complex and in order to understand him, you have to stay with his logic and follow it in circles. His style improves the way a student thinks and writes. Downside, it's difficult and grades drop.
