Comment:
Paul is universally respected at RSJ, and for good reason. He is wise beyond his years, and students can learn a lifetime of lessons from him. However, he is awful at feedback. He will take three weeks to grade your paper, assign two different papers during those three weeks, and then give you an 85 with ZERO feedback. Really annoying for students.

I learned absolutely nothing in this class, no syllabus or textbook, just a bunch of random discussions that focused more on feelings and the political climate. This class is a JOKE of a news track prerequisite when Paul is teaching.

Paul is a nice guy but don't take his class. I learned nothing from him, constantly got B's on everything, and he did not take the time to show me how to improve. We spent hours in his class wasting time talking about feelings. All of it was so pointless. There are professors at the J-school that will really help, he is not one of them.

Paul is such a great professor. At first he can be seen as very intimidating, but he really practices what he preaches. Paul is a no nonsense kind of guy, but what he has to teach is much much more than just journalism. He taught life lessons as well as lessons in how to become the most successful student you can be. Highly recommend!

Paul is an astounding professor. He is almost sage-like in his approach to the material. Enigmatic and mythic, it is like being taught by Kane from Kung-Fu. He carries the weight of so much life experience and he wields it expertly. He has stories for days and the class hung on his every word. In a Narrative Journalism class, that is so valuable.

Paul is great because he taught you how to teach yourself. I only got a B- in his class, but I felt like I had gained more than just a grade. I discovered my talent and passion for writing because Paul pushed me to be better. He said the first day "I want you to think in a more complicated way" and that's exactly what he taught!

Comment:
Paul Mitchell's 110 class is not mandatory, but is extrememly helpful for first year journalism students. He gives out a few writing assignments but 90% of class is spent on life discussions and tips for a successful career in the journalism field. He knows what he's talking about and pushes students to do their best while setting up good habits.

He chooses favorites. Those are his little minions that follow him around like puppies suggest him as the greatest thing since sliced bread then proceed to write amazing reviews. Everyone else Have fun struggling to pass. How do I know this I was one of his favorites but I knew better. Didn''t learn a single thing. All self-taught.

Paul is a phenomenal professor, one of those that defines your college experience. He makes you work hard for your grades but he is realistic. If you do your best, you will get good grades. He challenges you to step outside of your comfort zone, that is the hardest part of the class. I would love to have him every semester.

Get ready to cry. To be pushed to your limits. To want to quit. But most of all, to learn and to find your inner journalist. Paul's class is not for the faint hearted nor for the lazy. To succeed in his class you have to want it. Let him in and he'll teach you everything. He's tough grader, very blunt and has no structure at all. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

One of the BEST professors I've had. Ever. Helps you with so much more than journalism. Definitely not an easy A, but you'll learn so much more than what a grade can give you. He's rough, blunt, and direct. But so is the Journalism world. Prepare yourself for the future - take a class from Paul!

It's a good thing I took Paul's class when I did. He's very serious about what he does and doesn't make room or time for those who are unsure. I realized that everything journalism entails is the opposite of who I am because of his class. He really shows students the whole picture of journalism and I'm glad I got out of that picture quickly.

This class isn't mandatory, but totally worth it. It is more of a "life class" than a journalism class, but he shows us how it intertwines with journalism and your future employers. The class is a majority discussion.

Great professor. Can be intimidating, bu he pushes you. My writing improved greatly from his class. He makes the class like a realisitc journalism career. Everyday is a surprise, somedays you'll be walking around campus trying to find someone to interview and write a story due before class is over, other days you may do research.

Very difficult class, but Paul is an honest professor. He never sugarcoats anything. This class tells you whether you really want to be a journalist or not. Get on his good side (try hard, don't be late, etc) and he'll love you. This class stressed me out but I learned a lot!

Was really excited to have Paul for a prof.--and then he made me hate journalism so much I will never take another class in it. Doesn't teach ANYTHING. Expects students to figure stuff out on their own; grades as though students already know what they're doing--lots of C's in general. Unrealistic deadlines--only take this class if you have no life.

Paul is one of the top three professors at UNR. The j-school is extremely creditable and one can tell he's proud of it. He makes you work, but he is more than willing to help. People complain he's too hard, but it's only because he wants the best people in the j-school. If you want to be a successful journalist, take his class.
