Comment:

Don't take this professor. He would rather highlight the whole essay and leave you guessing on what you did wrong than blatantly saying it. Instead of giving constructive criticism, he insults students which discourages them from reaching out for help. I did not learn much from this class, take another FYW class with a professor that isn't rude :)

Comment:

Ok here's the thing about Dr. Thomas-- he is a very interesting guy, but is perhaps the most frustrating man I have ever met. He cares way too much about citations in your papers, and not enough about the content. Instead of telling you what is wrong, he just highlights the issue and hopes you can figure it out on your own. Avoid him if you can.

Comment:

I absolutely loved Dr. Thomas' class! Such a hilarious guy and truly brilliant. Class is fairly easy. Not a lot of outside work besides essays. He will leave harsh comments on papers but you will write some of your best papers in this class. The lecture is always enjoyable and he is very understanding. Take his class!!!

Dr. Thomas was overall an amazing professor! You have to write four essays with multiple rewrites, so don't procrastinate and do your work in a timely manner. He's forgiving if you turn in a paper a day late if you're a good student. The class is EASY. No testsquizzes. One caveat: you don't get a grade until the end of the semester. DO YOUR WORK.

Dr. Thomas is a truly great professor. He teaches in a laid back style which is very appealing. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and would highly recommend him.

Thomas is an odd specimen. He manages to combine an extremely laid-back classroom environment with genuinely challenging standards. He pushed my writing further than any other teacher in quite some time, and yet did so without causing terrible stress. I highly recommend Professor Thomas.

The class is helpful for becoming a writer. However if you just want an A it is harder than I thought going into it. I had no idea what my grade would be until after the class ended. He never gives back a grade with his feedback even though I asked many times. Wants you to be a good writer not an A student, which was frustrating.

He is really sarcastic and at first doesn't appear helpful, but really is always wanting to meet with students. He won't tell you what he wants in papers but he does this so students can choose what to do. Allows for many rewrites and you will actually enjoying going to class and hear him talk.

The absolute best professor I have ever encountered. Makes class environment enjoyable and interesting. Made me want to become a teacher. Sarcastic S.O.B., but it's part of his charm. Helped me build some confidence at a school that can easily bring you down

By far the best experience I've had with a professor at Furman; truly, he is incredible. Admittedly, I took this class just as a GER but it turned out to be the most enriching classroom experience I've had in my life. I like Thomas a lot. I think he's realistic about the fact that you can't really teach teaching so sometimes I felt like I wasn't really learning even though his class is interesting. His grading is arbitrary and somewhat unhelpful. Not good at communicating what he wants and expects.

Dr. Thomas (AKA "Clean") is both intelligent and fun. Taking his courses through the Master's program made me a much more effective teacher. Writing Workshop was the best class I have taken in my life. The course not only made me an obsessive writer, but it also gave me the tools to make my own students passionate about writing.
