I've taken Raymond Obstfeld's Novel Workshop several times, and my writing has improved in leaps and bounds because of his valuable feedback, encouragement, and criticism. As with anything in life, you are going to get out of this class what you put into it. I highly recommend this class for anyone who wants to improve their craft.

Easily one of my favorite classes. He's incredibly helpful, supportive, and knowledgeable. Don't come in thinking you know everything or aggressively defensive, and you'll experience major growth. It was scary at first, but he does everything possible to make sure you have what you need to grow.

He is passionate about his craft but has a foul mouth. He gets the arrogant people to rethink their wrting styles. Even though he is opinionated if you speak up and share your voice but have a desire to learn he will challenge you and change your life. Im so thankful I took his class. I wish the class had a part 2 for scriptwriting.

Have now taken his writing class twice. He is a very good speaker. Funny, interesting, and original. You will look forward to hearing him talk. He is very experienced in his field and can give a lot of valuable insight. Your work will be criticized by about 30 people. It's scary at first but very helpful and a good growing experience.

I honestly didn't like his style of teaching in the first few weeks. However, Obstfeld has proved to be a great teacher and thinker who helps his students think deeply about life and what they are meant to be through the different characters that he discusses in class, whether they are in a poem, short story, or a film. He will change your life!

Raymond can appear as very intimidating and opinionated, but over time he'll become a huge inspiration to you. Be ready to spend hours editing your script every week and peer-editing. What I love about him is that he shuts down all the egotistical students who think they know it all. By the end, my script improved TREMENDOUSLY. Take him.

A great prof who challenges you. Teaches you to try and prove your point and how to write an essay. My writing def improved. He's funny at times but def gets your brain working. As long as you do your part as a student and participate, you should get a good grade.

Life changing course and professor. You won't just be slaves to papers the whole semester. You discuss units in poetry, short stories, songs, and films. He WILL teach you how to write a proper essay. This guy gets it and I honestly learned more about life than anything else in this course or any other course I've taken. TAKE HIM you won't regret it

Discourages opinion. Imposes his own on you. Really dismissive. And also really annoying.

His 100 class focuses on logic, debate, and philosophy more than anything else. Doesn't treat ESL students very well (surprising for how liberal he is). Attendance is very mandatory. Will tear any argument, paper, or student apart. Unlimited essay rewrites. Expect to spend weeks doing research for each paper. Great motivator.

Just from his 100 class I feel more intelligent! I honestly believe everyone should take his class. It didn't even feel like an English class really.. Some people will not like how he puts the spotlight on students when they say something illogical, but it is part of the learning process! I'm even planning to take his ENG 101 class next semester.

He's a bit of a dik. But something tells me that if one of you share's this with him he will be amused by it. His class is challenging, but the guy readily dismisses any opinion that contradicts his own. I don't know if he's simply trying to challenge us and make us think for ourselves or if he's simply into himself and sees himself as all-knowing

I'm an aspiring writer and I always refer to Raymond Obstfeld's screenwriting course I took back in 1989. I've taken other screenwriting courses and he is the only instructor whom emphasizes the SIX WORLD VISIONS. He is a man of few words and an overall thorough instructor. He turned me on to THE THIRD MAN with Orson Welles. I miss the field trips.

(continued from previous post) Don't let him intimidate you. Think for yourself and stick to your guns. You'll come out better for it in the end. Don't completely discount his opinion. ANY OPINION IS VALUABLE FROM ANYBODY. I just don't like how he presents his opinion. A movie/show is not bad just because Obstfeld says it is.
