I have no idea why people think Hertz is hard. I had him for phono, history of English, english grammar, Syntax, semantics, and intro to world languages. The only class I got a B in was semantics and it was my first class above the 200 level. The rest I got As. Write down what everything on the board. Ask him if you don't understand the class.

Took his class three times. He's very knowledgeable and modest. I learned a lot in his class. If learning is something that's more important to you than getting a good grade, I definitely recommend you to take his class. Tests and term papers are a pain, but they motivate you to study harder.

As a person, he is awesome and brilliant with a rad accent from the Bronx. As a teacher, he inspires anxiety and thoughts of mental suicide. If you're a LING major, classes with him are inevitable. Lecture based, 2 exams, 1 (difficult!) essay. My advice: 1) Bring coffee 2) Take advtg of office hrs 3) Start essays early 4) Read booklet! Good luck.

I wrote the last comment but I need to add a few things. This is a VERY difficult class (phonology). If you put effort in, he does leave you with a lasting impression. The key is to talk to him. Go to his office hours and ask questions! You think you're not getting the class but you may surprise yourself. And he really is a sweet guy and does care!

He's a very intelligent, super nice man but his class is impossible. The text books (both his own, and one other) are from the 1970s and his lecture is boring and hard to understand. He repeats himself a lot and when you ask a question he doesn't explain very well. The paper is killer. I think I'd do fine in this class with a different teacher.

Worth taking. A?s ARE possible. Copy notes exactly, plus what he SAYS about board notes. Locate/study in the 2-4 texts. Reviews study guide! Allows Cour. 12 pt., which stretches page ct. Grad students write 2 papers. OK, lectures are a bit slow. Bring venti coffee. Around after class & office hrs. Friendly, great humor, and highly knowledgeable.

Difficult course, but Hertz is very intelligent and after he goes through the material a couple times it is much easier to understand.... prepare to work hard though (mentally).

Confusing, hard grading, assignments passed out at the last minute. If you asked for a clarification request he would just repeat lines out of his book. I learned very little to anything in this particular course. It was painful.

I noticed Hertz tends to repeat his stuff in different classes. Like, in Semantics he goes over stuff from Syntax. My advice: take one class with him. If it?s okay, consider taking others, since he?ll go over the same material in the same way. Keep in mind that he tends to set tests and papers dates at the same time across classes.

Always refer to the study guides. His lectures are often meandering, but he'll tends to make more sense during test reviews. Warning: for our class, he returned term papers as incomplete and needing revisions on the last day of class and wanted them back by the final, four days later.

He can be really hard to understand, but repeats himself constantly. Is not clear at all about how to improve your papers. However, he gives detailed study guides and answers all your questions. He can be aggravating, but he's not the worst prof ever. Apparently retiring, but still teaching a few classes part time.

very good professor, one of the best i have had. the material is complex, but Hertz is extremely knowledgeable and quite brilliant. His study guides are quite lengthy but also thorough and if you use them you will find that the tests are directly related. pay attention and attend class and you should do fine. again, great professor!

I believe that if you are in college you need to experience teacher like Dr. Hertz. He might not be the best teacher but he knows what he is talking about. Start early on the papers he assigns and you'll be fine. He does not give A's on papers. His tests are straight forward and if you study and read the material you will do just fine.I like him.

He is nice and amusing, but he is not that great of a teacher. The paper is hard. The tests are not bad. He gives a study guide and lets the class ask questions. My adivce, DONT FALL BEHIND ON THE READING. He doesnt make sense, but if you read its easier.

He's a funny old man who tells the same stories over and over. If you listen in class you will do well on tests. He's very sarcastic and amusing and patient to answer questions. He will push due dates when the class says they aren't ready. He eliminated one paper altogether. Take him if you want to learn something. I'm happy to be taking him again!

I agree. Dr. Hertz is a nice man, but he should retire. I visited him during his office hours to ask about improving my research papers; he told me he doesn't give As. I received B+s on both my papers. His study guides are 10 pages long and tests are difficult to understand even if you have studied all of the study guide material.
