Comment:

The entire grade is based upon exams and discussion participation. Lectures are boring and extremely monotone. Exams basically expect you to memorize every detail from the lectures and write out all examples in detail (even if he didn't provide detail during his lectures). Transition to online was horrible, not enough time given for exams at all.

Comment:

Lectures are often monotonous but he's friendly and does make jokes. Biggest issue with this class is that I don't agree with the style of his exams; you must remember every single detail and example, and regurgitate info. We didn't have a great TA so discussions were useless and boring. I was so excited for this class but ended up disappointed.

Comment:

Schoener is an amazing scientist, and was super accessible in office hours. He tries to be funny, and seems genuine. His class is VERY memorization heavy. To do well you have to memorize every concept and specific example in the notes to a T. Like seriously, every single word. Overall, not the worst professor

Comment:

I HATE ecology. I have absolutely no interest in it and ergo no interest in this class. That being said, this class was doable. Just understand every single word, concept and comma in his lecture notes. No I'm not being sarcastic. Memorization is key, it's what will get you an A. Don't waste your money on the text. Exams are in short answer format.

Be prepare to study his notes, his lectures are long but his ppt lectures contain all the info you need for test questions. He tries to make lecture funny so do give him credit for that. TA actually was very helpful and made things clear. Professor is really knowledgeable and test questions are quite long do study

Comment:

I absolutely loved this class! Dr. Schooner made ecology very interesting. The topics we covered in class as well as the different experiments with animals and plants were fun to learn about. His tests were not too hard too. I would recommend taking this class with him if you can.

Comment:

Dr Schoener is a legend, and it's an awesome opportunity to take this class with him. He wrote the foundational parts of several topics. He's not the easiest for everyone, but his grading scheme is advantageous. You get to pick 2 questions (of 4) to answer each test, and you can generally predict what he's going to ask and focus accordingly.

LITERALLY MEMORIZE EVERYTHING IN THE NOTES. I'm not kidding. He asks for you to know everything such as 4/4 of the examples on a topic. DO NOT BLOW OFF THIS CLASS. You need to spend time memorizing. Wish I had known what was expected of me for the first test. Overall really interesting class just frustrated at the amount of memorization for tests.

His tests are NOT easy. he gives you a choice of answer 2 out of 4 essay questions with parts a,b,c,d. he expects very detailed answers in 1 1/2hrs and grades them pretty hard. i memorize his lectures and even read the book(not required) but still don't do well.

Dr. Schoener is nice and intelligent but he makes an interesting subject super dull and leeches all of the excitement out of learning. Also, although his tests were easy, he restricts the answers to only what are exactly on his notes, no outside examples or learning from other courses is accepted and thus he limits the value and breath of his class

Comment:

Extremely interesting class and the prof clearly loves his subject. He is a little quiet and hard to hear at times, but very approachable and cares about his students. Midterms have 2 essay questions, make sure you know the concepts and ALL of the examples that explain them really well in detail. There are 2 midterms and the final (not cumulative).

Really easygoing, nice professor. Shows real interest in the subjects he covers and applies them to modern day experiments/issues. Lectures can be long, but are very important to attend, as is discussion!! Book simply provides more coverage/examples on the topic. Essay exams, remember the lecture material, especially experiments. Great class!!

The subject is interesting, but the lectures are dry. He is an intelligent man, but just doesn't make it exciting at all. It isn't too difficult as long as you attend lectures and memorize the material. Exams are essay format. All you need to do is regurgitate the information. Memorize terms and examples. Don't buy the book, I never had to use it.

interesting class. I really liked him but write fast as he talks, his writing on the old school projector is unreadable at times. Go to discussion, my TA was great and reviews the weeks topics. Prepare to hear about lizards!

Tough exams-essay format, must know every example for every concept. Should offer a study guide. Good survey course of ecology though. Leave course learning a lot of interesting, enjoyable information. Great professor, just really tough exams and illegible handwriting. Just take notes as he's talking or you'll miss it.

I doubt he will teach this class again, the seminar, but you can tell from it that he is a well versed teacher and he has a lot of field experiance esp. (lizards) he is a nice guy and if you care about the subject then you will do well in any of his classes.

easy class and i learned a lot. there is a lot of information but definitely not difficult to memorize or understand. the TA i had, evan, was great and cleared up any confusion. class easy very enough to do well in but don't slack off.
