Comment:

In 1976, I had Mr. Mayfield at STCC in Springfield Mass for English Comp 1&2. Mr. Mayfield is a likable professor. He is not a hard teacher but expects that students at the college level to have a good grasp of English grammar. Mr. Mayfield is not a demanding professor but he is frustrated at how poorly students are prepared for writing.

Avoid this professor if at all possible. I read the reviews on here and took him anyway... my mistake. He is a forgetful, condescending old man who will give even the best English students awful grades on papers. He pays so much attention to MLA that he doesn't even take into account the actual content of your paper.

I don't agree with most of the comments.I believe he is a good teacher and tries to help you out a lot.He took the time out to look at everyones draft after draft and made corrections and comments.Many teachers will not do this.I made an A in the class and all I did was come and do the work on time.I have to admit he forgets and is unclear at times

For one thing, some of the people who have complained about Mr. Mayfield's grading policies can't even spell correctly. Maybe that is why your papers have poor grades. Mayfield is not the best English teacher I have ever had, but he isn't the worst. He is a little unclear, but a generally good and helpful person.

He's not helpful at all. He doesn't understand the questions I ask, doesn't explain how to right the types of papers we write, and gets upset when we fail to do it correctly because we're lost! DO NOT TAKE.

Mayfield needs to retire ASAP! he is as incompitent as they come and literally has amnesia. He will tell u something u could do to make a better grade, then docks u for in the next paper. He has his own rules for english and legit grades on them. NEVER take this old geezer!

I absolugely HATED this class.. Walter would make up his own "english rules" that were not in the mla book and then would grade you on his rules.. it was impossible to pass. I did great in 101, but his class sucks.. DO NOT take him. He will give the whole class d's.. no joke.. you would have to work super hard just to pull a C. Not worth it!

hard teacher, but a good guy. he is very liberal and if you an get past that he respects you. he is a tough grader. everyone fails the first paper but he lets you redue it. as long as you email him your paper before it is due he will tell you how to make an a. he loves obama...which is not a good thing.

He made corrections on my first paper, then counted off when I made the suggested changes. I asked to deviate from the format he wanted, he wrote on my paper that it was okay, and when I turned it in he counted off 12 points. He wouldn't allow me to revise my paper because I didn't have a failing grade on it (76).

One of the worst teachers I have ever come across. If anyone would like to see what he is really like just ask me for the emails he sent me. Losing a students paper and cursing at a student is unacceptable. It wont be long until his live gives out though.

Mayfield is a terrible teacher! He gave me a zero on my second paper because I didn't double space my work cited page and didn't have an explicit thesis. Rediculous or what. He also wasts a lot of time repeating useless analogies. I would recommend against taking his class.

Overall this class was Ok. Mr. Mayfield is pretty nice. The first two papers were graded very hard, but he let us rewrite one paper. I thought he was extremely generous for that. Sometimes he was unclear on what he wants which was a pain. He wouldn't be a first choice for EH 102, but if you have to take him its not the end of the world.

Mr. Mayfield is a nice guy in person but a horrible teacher! no one in my class made higher than a C- on the 1st and 2nd paper and we only do 5 pepers out of the whole semester!
