Excellent teacher! I don't know what these other reviews are talking about but this man is a great teacher! Loved his class and his stories. Yes long papers. It's not an easy class but you're not in high school anymore. Pay attention, do the work and you'll pass. Pretty cut and dry.

One assignment in the class - a 35p final paper. Up to 2 other "assignments", but they aren't graded. If interested in the subject, this class will disappoint. The "lectures" are unintelligibleimprovised. Needing credits and willing to potentially get a CB?This class will do, otherwise avoid. All Finals, aprx1050pgs worth, are graded in 48hr span

Dr. Stuart is an incredible anthropologist and an interesting story teller, however he should not be a professor. His class is incredibly unorganized and frustrating. His class made me want to switch majors out of anthropology. We had to write a 40 page paper for an elective class, which he did not tell us about until after the drop date. AVOID!

Don't take the class unless you're an ANTH major. He treats it as if his is the only class you're taking for the whole semester. He rambles on and on about nothing and then assigns 25-30 page research papers, and then expects everyone, if your an ANTH major or not to know exactly what to do and changes what he says all the time.

I was looking forward to this class but was highly disappointed after the first week. Stuart rambles on about personal stories that have nothing to do with the course. Lecture was completely pointless. Still managed to get an A in the class while hardly going to lecture. Read the book, go to discussion and do the projects and you will be fine.

He truly cares about his students, even though it was a class of over a hundred kids. He even called me to make sure my exam rescheduling went alright. He works very hard to answer all questions adequately. Rants do occur, but it's refreshing as others have said. Dry sections like every class, but overall fun and everyone can find a topic to like.

I really enjoyed this class. Lecture was interesting. I thought his stories were refreshing as opposed to listening to him lecture non-stop on anthropology. I passed with either a high B or a low A and I never studied because he repeats things often in class. Do the reading, pay attention in lecture, do the assignments and you'll be fine.

He does tell stories in lecture, but that's the best part! Honestly, his classes are a nice break from dry professors. He does cover material while speaking and the TA's clarify any questions you have. They also write the tests- not too tough. Fall 2010: 3 exams, 3 projects, and a final. The readings are reasonable and one can glance over handouts.

Professor Stuart teaches nothing. He rambles incessantly. He assigns readings but doesn't lecture on them. When you speak to him privately, he is simply rude. Unless you are an Anth major who is a fountain of knowledge about religion, do not take this class. He wants you to participate but he talks about things that students know nothing about.

Long-winded but humorous. He's yet another example of a UMD professor that talks a lot but doesn't actually say anything. Don't bother attending lectures, just read the handouts and go to discussions; you can get an easy A that way. Attendance is taken but it's not mandatory.

Dr Stewart is extremely smart and has travelled all over the world and has amazing stories. However, the class itself seems to be lacking in structure. He talks about all kinds of crazy stuff at all different times until you just become lost.

Professor Stuart is a really nice man but frequently when someone asks a question he goes on a very long tangent/rant and then asks: "does that answer your question?"- and the issue is you can't remember what your question was about in the first place. Other than that -- Talk to your TA, go to the review sessions and read - & you should be fine.

He was not an interesting prof, I barely learned anything. His lectures were not worth attending, and the books are expensive. I got an A- in the class, but it was hard to get. The class was not my first choice and I thought it would be an ez A, but it wasn.t. I recommend some other class.

Funny guy. Devoted ANTH majors only please, he's good at weeding out non-anthropologists from his classes. Will find him irritating the first time you take him, but he knows a lot and over time you'll really want his approval in your work. Defenitely an irreplaceable part of the ANTH experience at UMD.

People who have reviewed Bill poorly are at best ignorant or lazy and at worst simply stupid. His vocabulary may be intimidating if intelligent conversation is not your wheelhouse. Do the reading, learn to write, and participate in class. These requirements are beyond the pale of what should be expected at the university.

Had him for 260 before this. If you think lecture with him is tough try small class. He knows a lot but he's hard to follow. He does grow on you after some time though. To do well in his class make sure you write LONG papers with plently of footnotes.

Definitely for serious students only. He is a fountain of knowledge and he likes to be probed. Treat the class like your a human dissecting an alien (because that is what Bill Stuart resembles). Crypitc notes and dinosauric vocabulary can be troublesome but i do believe he genuinely wants students to learn: but demands they take the first step.

Funny and nice, but not-so-good professor. Not only does he go offtrack with stories during lecture, entire classes often consist of such(often dull)stories. His handwriting on the board is practically illegible. Keeps track of lecture attendance. Luckily, the TA's were decent. Most of what you learn in the class will come from reading the books.
