Comment:
Dr. Thurmond has a bad reputation, but his classes really are not bad. They're very memorization heavy. You have to write down exactly what he says in class and say that on the test. So, a lot of studying and memorization are required. His lectures are funny and interesting. Overall, he's a good professor, you just have to be willing to study.

Thurmond is a good professor despite what people may say. If you actually put the work in you'll be fine. If you put his class on the back burner, then do not expect to do well. He makes the classes interesting by telling stories and always teaches the same meaning you will always know what to expect from him. Visit him during his office hours.

Pretty bad prof. You have 2-3 tests and one paper and that's it. But for the tests, you have to straight up memorize his definitions from lecture (don't bother with the book, he only accepts definition that he states word for word in the class, not from the book). If you don't word for word regurgitate what he says in lecture you dont get credit.

Despite having lectures every single day, Prof. Thurmond does try to crack jokes to make my 8am a little bit better. His class is one where you will definitely have to put in work to get an A, but he is always willing to help you outside of class! He is really understanding and caring which makes his tough grading style better.

Although the man has cool hats, he is a terrible teacher and I hate him. He tests you on his definitions (his!! not the books!!! the book is wrong!!!!!!!) and if you don't get them word for word then you get points off on the test! The saving grace of this class is that there are two papers to keep you from failing. Not a fun time for intro level

Great teacher. Hes thorough. Perhaps he wants to bring respectability to Sociology through making sure students know the content. For those who whine; youre in college so study. This class needs no more than an hour per class to read and study. If you do that youll receive an A.

Comment:
Absolute worst teacher at Wofford. Lectured the whole class with no interaction with students. Monotone voice and boring subject material. Graded by maybe 4 things all semester, which were extremely difficult. If you did not answer a definition word for word what he put down for notes, he would take points off. Do NOT take this class. It is awful.

Comment:
Not a very good teacher for an intro level college course to sociology. The class was very boring and was simply taking down notes the whole class. He did not engage with the class and just talked the entire class non-stop. The class was actual torture and was the most boring 50 minutes I've ever spent on MWF's.

He treated this class like a "weed out" class---10 of the approx 24 students dropped due to the class being very difficult! Unknown of those that stayed in the class what grade they received. THIS IS SOCIOLOGY not Organic Chemistry.

What Thurmond says in class was what he would test on. Pay attention during lectures and takes TONS of notes. He will ramble a lot and start talking about things totally unrelated to the original topic, but sometimes he puts those on the test. Remember the examples he uses in class. Super hard grader on tests and papers. To do well: regurgitate

Dr. Thurmond made an interesting class very frustrated. He's a nice guy but expects way too much for an intro class. You can know absolutely everything but if it's not worded just how he wants it he'll take off for it on the tests. His papers were really easy though. He also doesn't make Powerpoints so you have to take really good notes in class .

Dr. Thurmond is one of my favorite professors. He makes an 8:30 class painless with his positive energetic attitude. His test are very straightforward with all his question coming from the notes he writes on the chalk board. The class is also pretty interesting.

I had several classes with Dr. Thurmond when I attended Wofford. I graduated in 1997. I also went with him to Belize during interim. He is a great teacher, who keeps his classes interesting. I was an English major, but ended up double majoring in Sociology because of his classes. Great guy!

Interesting lectures, however a very subjective grader! If you don't answer something in the way he would have worded it he will take off points. I enjoyed his lectures and they were interesting, but I struggled with writing how he wanted me to write even after going and asking for help.

Really sweet guy, challenging in class, though! He really tries to get you to think and isn't afraid to put students on the spot. Overall, really interesting subject matter. Tests are easier once you're used to them (format is relatively constant). He can be a hard grader especially on essay form. Work hard and you should do fine.
