Comment:
He's an okay professor but a vile human being. The material is okay, pretty easy, but Devine has an impossibly large superiority complex. He's awful and condescending, especially when someone contradicts him. I dreaded going to class every day. I know several people he's made cry. My advisor told me he gets more and more complaints every semester.

Professor Devine is knowledgable about the material he teaches. The assignments are interesting and relate the dense content to real-life scenarios, which is helpful to understand. The material isn't easy, but the class more interesting if you do the readings and participate. He's available to help in office hours, especially for the final.

I absolutely dreaded this class and sociology is my favorite subject. The course material should have been so interesting and beneficial, but instead Devine made me not want to go to class. I actually gave up on asking questions because every time I did he would take ten minutes and end up not answering my question at all. Avoid at all costs.

worst class ive ever taken at tulane. if it wasn't a requirement i would never have taken this class. most boring teacher (everyone sat on the computers the whole lecture) he gives hard pop quizzes on the readings and participation actually matters. he is a tough grader. i didnt learn anything from his class and had no idea what he was saying.

Comment:
Lectures are brutally long, he speaks with very confusing dialogue and makes the subject matter increasingly disjointed. He is too intelligent to be a teacher. You definitely should do the reading for the pop quizzes and weekly assignments. No exams, but the final is an in class essay with 10 possible choices given beforehand. Avoid if not required

had to take him for a major requirement otherwise I would have never taken him. Talks in circles, incapable of speaking of these complex abstract social theories in simple terms (doesn't explain them just uses a bunch of big fancy words that don't even make sense). And then gives ridiculous quizzes on readings

Devine is a homie. Do the readings and actually listen in class instead of using your laptop to check facebook and reddit. If you leave your laptop at home for lecture, read, and ask questions, I guarantee you will get an A

I dig his class. Sure he is vague most of the times and can go off on tangents, but he cracks me up and actually knows a great deal about what he's talking about. If you have a question ask it, or you can just do the readings and come to your own conclusions. I'm doing well and haven't done more than 1/3 of the readings. Of course this is my major

The course material is interesting, but he's a nice guy, but he just doesn't deliver the material well. He's vague in all of his lectures but then takes off points for lack of details. He "draws" diagrams on the board that make no sense at the end of class. He's a nice guy and I think he cares about his subject, but he's too smart to teach well.

There is no excuse for making this material not interesting, but somehow Devine manages to do it. Classes are a rambling mess of material, and yet he expects clarity from papers. Please don't let him ruin Urban Studies for you, the other professors are too good, but don't expect a stimulating introduction.

Had him for Cinematic New Orleans. Hated it. We met once a week, and it was only a 200 level class, yet we had 10-150 pages to read each week, plus a summary on the reading, plus a 2-8 page film review. I couldn't understand anything he said.

Comment:
I had him for cinematic new orleans. The films are interesting but the way he presents the material is unclear, confusing, and verbose. Way too work intensive for a 200 level class. 2 essays a week on a film you must watch out of class and a reading of anywhere from 10-200 pages. Grading system is ridiculous and incoherent.

He's good, but not great. His material is really interesting, and he's not TOO dull, though he can ramble a bit. He can come across as a jerk, but I don't think that's intentional. You probably won't love him, but you certainly won't hate him either. A bit of tough grader, so its important to pay attention in class.

I had him for Cinematic New Orleans. This guy was such a bore. I totally thought that mixing New Orleans and Film- two things I love- into one class would be awesome, but not so. His grading system confuses the hell out of me, and he's kind of intimidating. I definitely wish I hadn't bothered with this class.

this class requires A LOT of work. on top of the mandatory 20hrs for service learning there are 4 projects that require at least 6 hrs in the field. class meets once a week and and seven 3 page papers are required. some of the readings are not too difficult, but a couple are painfully difficult.

The class is incredibly boring, and for most if it you are doing silent power points. The research project is not difficult, but is extremely time consuming, and he is a very tough grader. His lectures are convoluted and boring, and he is unclear.

Do not take this class unless you are going for the Urban Studies Minor. The Service Learning is ridiculous and so is his grading. I've never worked so hard for a 200-level class!

Interesting class, great material...Devine's a really knowledgeable guy, but can come across as a jerk...don't let that scare you off, however...you can def. get an A in this class if you can tolerate him and put in some hard work.
