I didn't know how to code, took his Perl class back in the day. Was able to use Perl and show I was competent at my job. I used that to progress and further my career. Used Perl + the experience I got while working at 2 places to obtain a job at a start up - which was acquired. Pay attention, work hard, learned the principals he taught.

John is tough - and great. I learned a lot from him. He doesn't have a lot of patience for those who don't put in the effort. Demonstrate that you are working hard and he will help you. Sometimes he gets angry - oh well - sometimes there is a price to pay for learning from a smart guy.

I think that he is one of the best instructors at the school. Although he is good at what he does, he will make you feel stupid if you ask a question that is deemed stupid by him. He is a very hard grader, don't attempt any of his classes unless you are willing to give it your all.

Look. This isn't about being whiny, or not trying, or asking dumb questions. It's about prior knowledge: if you already *know* the subject he's teaching, and know it well, you'll like him and do fine. But if you're taking the class because you *don't* actually know the material, and are trying to *learn* it, you should avoid this guy at all costs.

If you are learning the topic for the first time, you probably won't make it. Sometimes he will help. For the rest of the time, he will not only turn you down, but also demean you. When you get to the class, it will be clear that he is teaching for those who take programming as a career. If you are not one of those people, don't take his class.

He is mean and belittles students who ask "stupid" questions. Brings years of experience, but that also means he is pretty arrogant. Seriously, don't waste your money and time on a teacher who acts the way he does towards students. I'm surprised he mentions he reads this site, I can't imagine him caring what others think of him.

One of the best! He definitely knows his stuff. Most of the class is having trouble, but that's just because they're not trying hard enough. If you want to learn, TAKE HIM WHILE YOU CAN. Winter 2011 is the last term before he retires. It's so easy to get an A in his class. Caution: wait till after class to ask questions, or you'll be sorry.

No doubt one of the best teachers I've ever taken in my college stint, if not my whole life. Let me make this clear though, he is definitely hard on grading and cares a lot about how your program works. Just put it this way : if you are a real programmer and want to improve your logic and skill, take this guy. If not, take softer teachers.

If you are not a person who always complains, you will get simply the greatest fun attending his classes. Yes, he is demanding but he is knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Never delay to do a homework for the last day.

If you want to learn he is great. If you are a whiny college student finding your way in life he may not be for you. I feel bad for him in these reviews because you will be attending lectures with idiots, and they can ask a lot of questions. Come to this class knowing the prerequisites.

Extremely arrogant and condescending. Belittles you when you ask questions. Do yourself a favour and avoid him at all costs. He may be good for the upper most cream of the crop of students, but for everyone else, he makes you feel like an idiot.

He was very unclear and didn't even accept my friend's handwritten homework assignment without being clear on how he wanted it. Only take his classes if you already know all the stuff on the subject because he teaches very little well.

I was excited for BG before meeting Prof Perry. His course & lectures lack structure, clarity, & focus. He just talks about concepts without actually teaching them. He is arbitrary & particular in his coding demands. He lectures as though we're already advanced programmers. I didn't want to spend the semester angry at him & hating C, so I dropped.

John Perry has a VERY HIGH subject knowledge but DOESN'T mean good teacher. He scares the **** out of med to low level students. Very random in grading. "Only bad question is a question not asked" -Perry DOESN'T believe in this, you will feel sorry for silly Qs PS: He reminds me of SHREK every time I listen to him, no offense I enjoy it :).

Comment:
Lacks the patience and professionalism to be an effective teacher. In a subject matter where there are different approaches to reach a solution, Perry berates and insults other students and their solutions. Provides a hostile learning environment for anyone who has questions regarding the material, often embarrassing students in class.

This guy is a failure as a teacher plain and simple. He knows his stuff, but fails at teaching them. Has attitude problems everywhere. He expects optimal answers even when he doesn't teach half of them, and he'll mark correct answers full points off if it is not 'optimal' enough for this egotistical d-bag. Avoid him at all costs.

Before taking this class loved, using this os and programming. However this class really killed my love for it. Teacher puts people down when asking questions, randomly marks off points for correct answers. in class teaches vaguely, and the hw and tests are not even close to what he taught. Only take this prof if you have money to waste or are pro

Absolutely the worst teacher ever. I am never come across anyone full of himself. He is definitely in the wrong field. Instead of teaching, he should be work as a programmer in a some cubicle where he does not have to socialize. No social or teaching skills whatsoever. Foothill college has better CIS staff.
