Comment:
Discussion and reading based. Had us do a long review of the readings every single class. Used no visual representation of what he was talking about except for the occasional PowerPoint in which he just read long definitions. Goes on tangents about his own life. Tests are oddly worded and poorly written. Also he does not use canvas.

This class is what people should think of when they think of a college education. The class adds to your character, not just your grade. Lots of class discussions but you get to express your opinion instead of listening to constant lecture. Best class to take for General E credit and easy since it's based on your personal opinion and discussion.

Overall a decent teacher. Attendance is pretty much required as the class is so discussion based. A lot of reading is required as well to do successful on assignments.

Ive taken a few classes with him and they are all structured the same: readings, discussions, short answer take-home essay exams. I learned a lot from him and he is very intelligent. Yes, he can ramble and discussions can get boring at times but if you put in the effort, you will take a lot from his classes. I would highly recommend him

He is a nice guy, but MY GOD he goes on some crazy tangents. He doesn't know how to shut up! This class is super discussion oriented, so if you're one of those people that also has a hard time shutting up then this class if definitely for you.

I've taken 2 of Wingard's classes and I'm not even an ANTH student. His teaching style is to the point, yes his tests have specific word counts but they are short answer take-home tests! He appreciates students that can follow basic instructions and can write concisely, it's not that much to expect! Take 354, the tourism class is super interesting

At the beginning of the semester I was so worried that this professor was going to be super hard and the class was going to be impossible. Yes, the professor was hard and the class was pretty difficult but I still passed with a B and appreciate his teaching style. It can be dry, but he makes you want to work for the grade.

I worked my ass off in this class and he still gave me a bad grade, others in my class said they got bad grades and he was a horrible teacher. I thought I was doing well and ended up not doing well. He expects way too much and is too particular. Gives word counts for each essay, no more no less.

His intentions are good, but his expectations are a bit unrealistic. Prepare to read your butt off, and read it well because he expects you to know it ALL backward and forward and in depth. An alright class/teacher, but also really stressful and has high high high expectations.

John is an excellent Professor. I have had him for two courses and regret that I no longer have any classes with him. His classes are tough ( a lot of reading) but his an open-minded and fair intructor that inspires his students to do their best. Really Really great professor!

he's really smart and he makes you really think outside the bubble with his comments. The reading is a little thick at first and I enjoyed the second book a lot more. his test are difficult because i don't know what he's looking for, but he is supportive. he is objective and loves it when you have something to say. i learned a lot

Big dissapointment....please demote him from his position as the department chair. Unorganized breakdown of assignments and pointless reading. Im avoiding him for the rest of my time at Sonoma as an Anthropolgy major.

John Wingard is an excellent teacher in the old, lecture-intensive style. His take-home tests were hard but I learned from them - the process of writing the essays seemed to consolidate what I had learned in class. Don't hesitate to take his classes but be prepared to work hard.
