Comment:
Before taking this course I came to Rate My Professor and saw horrible reviews for Melcon that I almost dropped. We are nearly at the end of the semester and the reviews are just completely opposite of what I experienced. Although it is true that Melcon goes off topic, he is a good professor and will help you if you are stuggling.

This guy is very esoteric in his liking's. He loves, loves, loves Malawi!!!!!!!! He assigns a small hw assignment every week, which is fine. However, finding the specified article to write about can prove lugubrious to achieve. He rants, goes off subject, is self-absorbed, and does not have a straightforward lecture-to test philosophy.

He is very opinionated, a lot of the stuff you learn in class regarding the topic world affairs is based off of his opinion. What he likes, who he hates, what is stupid, etc. He has two papers that he grades really strict based on grammar. Very confusing, his lectures don't follow to the syllabus at all, totally irrelevant to each other.

This professor is the worst that i have had taken classes. On arriving, he started to talk about topics that he wants to, but mostly about Africa and Japan.( this was world geography class) I didn't learn anything about world geography. Exams are not from class materials( really hard to study for exam) Never take his class

This class was horrible. He was using a completely different book in the beginning so the class did horrible on the first quizzes. His lectures are random. He'll walk into class and just start talking about random stuff. His notes are sloppy. You can study the book for hours and still fail his tests. Whether you pass his class or not is pure luck.

This guy is horrible. His test consist of random facts that he brings up like what his brother in law thinks about Obama. No idea how he still has a job. If it is rainy he won't show up for class.

Just seems to go off topic but his lectures can be very funny. Tests are kinda weird, but its curved. If you want to study and earn an A, this is not the class for you. Its basically come to class, very little study and hope you get a lot of the questions right. Studying will not help much.

Rants about nothing every day he's currently talking about a monkey learning to smoke and has been for a few minutes. You have to go to class but he sucks at staying on topic. He asks RANDOM questions that no one would ever know. BUT the class isn't too hard just take notes.

His class was not an easy grade and he does expect you to do the reading and study for quizzes/tests. He has a light -hearted nature so that may mislead some into thinking that he doesn't expect much from his students. Take notes/ study to make sure you have a good grasp on the material based on the SYLLABUS/lectures. Warning:conveys xtraknowledge.

Great teacher, but a bit scattered. He lets you know exactly what is on the test, so just read the assigned text and you'll be fine. Funniest teacher at Chico imo; class is not mandatory yet I go just to get a laugh!

Melcon was scattered and some of his information was questionable. He is nice and personable, but he's far off from being a good teacher.

Nice guy, easy teacher. Tests questions are ambiguous at best, but if you argue why you answered "incorrectly" well he will give you the point. Do not have to attend class; although I recommend it since his only assignments are the midterm and final.

I'll start with the good news. You don't have to buy a textbook you just read the paper everyday, the tests are just based off the paper. The bad news is the actual class is extremely boring. He rambles on and I almost fell asleep in his class everyday. Takes a liberal stance on every issue and talks bad on anything that is conservative. BORING!

He told the class that he disliked the national anthem because it isn't fair for southern states to hear about how their confederates got defeated... HE THOUGHT THE SONG WAS WRITTEN DURING THE CIVIL WAR. Granted he's a world issues professor, but still, really? PS, he also tends to run into inanimate things (desks, walls, etc.). He's a nutjob.

Well, he is apparently just bailing on us for 6 weeks in the middle of the semester. Some other guy is coming in to teach for him. And Melcon won't tell us why he is leaving...just that he is. whatever. Its a painfully boring class, and Melcon comes off as a typical elitist liberal (big surprise at chico). Avoid him if possible.

Pretty smart guy--seems like a UC teach: as in a little too smart for the kids and kidercare teachers at Chico. Get a clue, this guy sees his students as individuals, not as his minions as do most of the other department wanna beez!

What a freakin Joke, the things that he sites as facts are at best opinions. Bull****s his way through the NY Times and that's what the class is about. Couldn't teach a kid how to tie their shoes...It is an easy ass class though...If you actually want to learn though stay away.
