Comment:
If you don't have to take this class, save yourself the trouble and don't do it. Linguistics is an interesting subject, but not when Baksi teaches it. The lectures are pretty dry. As for readings and outside sources, prepare to travel back in time! You won't see any groundbreaking new theories; only articles from the 60s.

I have never taken a class this difficult. It is unclear how assignments are graded and your final grade depends on 3 tests, an essay, and random summary papers for articles she assigns. I tried to go to her office hours to ask about grades and she was never there. Even emailing was tedious and it took forever to get a response.

Only lectures the entire class. Rarely have info on upcoming tests and assignments. I actually wrote multiple essays just in case she forgot to mention it was even assigned... Responds to emails slowly, but gives good info. Make sure you make the subject of the email EXACTLY as she wants it or you don't get a response at all.

She assigned a 13,000 word reading. We had a quiz on it to show wed read it. The question included a test that was NOT in the article. That means every student, whether you read it or not, got a 0. This level of organization is normal for her. Shes also incredibly nit-picky and tends to deflect blame onto students.

WORST. TEACHER. EVER. Can't understand her 95% of the time due to her thick accent. She is very rude to her students. Her class is based on 3 exams and "3" papers. Your grade significantly depends on the exam and term paper. Don't take her if you have the choice.

Baksi is a very smart woman! She was a stern professor but very respectful as long as you are respectful to her. I did very poorly on the first exam because I missed a class that we learned 20% of what was on the exam. I met with her for office hours and explained myself and she gave me 5 extra points back on the exam!!!! She is very understanding.

Comment:
Baksi is very condescending and rude to her students. She has this accent that is very unclear, and refuses to slow down and annunciate words. If you don't show up to class, you will not get any notes because she does not post them. So can't get any notes in class because you can't understand her and then you can even read them online.

Comment:
Baksi is incredibly hard to understand due to her accent. If you ask her to repeat something she blames the student and refuses to clarify. She will openly make cruel remarks about a student and their income level (she feels she intrinsically knows due to her linguistics background). Although the work isn't bad, she is a dreadful professor.

I HATE THIS CLASS! she is the absolute WORST professor I have ever had. Terrible accent, you can't understand. Very rude and condescending. She's a very hard grader and your whole grade relies on 3 test scores.. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER. I know at least 3 other students that are re doing her class

Her class is awful. Avoid taking at all costs. Grade is off of 3 exams 1 paper and hardly any participation points. Exams are mainly fill in the blank, short answer, or essay questions. She missed 3 weeks of class and had an awful substitute come in who taught us nothing. Accent is extremely hard to understand. Puts on movies and leaves the room.

Teacher is very hard to understand and has a thick accent. Exams are very difficult with lots of fill in the blank, short sentence, multiple choice, and and essay questions. Not many grade opportunities other than exams

Her lectures are easy to take notes on and she always asks to make sure the information is clear before moving onto another topic. Gives very helpful reviews for the test- if you do those there's no way you'll fail. She is has a thick accent but you get used to it. Speak up in class and she will like you more. Makes jokes you wont always understand

Please avoid this teacher at all cost. She makes you feel terrible for asking questions. Lectures are incredibly boring and you can't help but accidentally tune her out. Her accent makes it a little difficult to understand. Extremely harsh grader.

I took Anthropology 101 for an easy diversity credit and it ended up being the opposite of easy. Shila makes this class so much harder than it has to be. She is rude and embarrasses students in class. I went in multiple times to her office hours and she was always rude and unhelpful. DO NOT TAKE HER.

Attendance isn't mandatory but she will literally take parts of her stupid little anecdotes and insert them in the exams. Lots of extra reading that she never even added to the book list. Very hard to understand her talk as well. Don't take her unless you don't have a choice.
