This wasn't the coll class that I wanted, and I am not educated on anything relating to data/comp sci, but it was very interesting! I learned a lot from Shellman and he did a good job of explaining things that didn't make sense. He also wore birks a lot which I appreciated very much

Comment:

A really cool guy. His classes are chill and fun; readings are mostly interesting and not a huge amount compared to other COLL150s. He is knowledgeable in data sciences. Grading criteria is very clear: he gives you reasons why you get a specific score for your paper. Not quite accessible after class though, but he always tries his best to help.

Comment:

The class consists of lectures about data and how it shapes our lives. Shellman does a good job applying data to nearly every field and you'll learn a lot about many different disciplines of data science. The homework consists of occasional reading and 4-5 coding projects (most of the code is provided for you, all are done in R).

Such a great professor! He gives such great feedback on papers and makes all of our discussions so interesting and enjoyable. Such a smart and funny guy, you will never be bored in his class. Even though I'm not a data science person I still got so much out of this class and it honestly has been my favorite class this semester!

Took Ethics in Data Science as my COLL150 and was blown away at how great of a teacher Shellman is. Every class is a group discussion about 2-3 readings assigned. They are fairly short and interesting. He's fun and knowledgable about so many things - definitely one of the smartest people I have ever met. Best professor here.

i don't know why everyone loves shellman so much; he made IR way too easy and he was somewhat disorganized. also class discussions were usually pretty horrible.

Expects you to be very aware of what's going on in the world-hard for non-IR majors but still glad I took him.Participation is HUGE and sometimes hard with so many opinionated people. Overall a great class though and the simulation is sweet.I really feel more aware of global issues after this class.

I'd take any class he teaches. W&M, if you let him go, you'll regret it! He's everything W&M is. Very passionate about IR & passes that onto his students. Simulation is something I will never forget. Participation is a little hefty, but say one thing per class & you're fine.

Super organized class (yay!) and laid-back personality (yay again!). The class isn't so great if you're an intl student (found it too americentralist), but good overall.
