Glad to learn about Chinese history and lit from a captivating, knowledgeable prof. Gave me a fresh perspective on Chinese culture, ppl, and history! She challenges students to think critically and be open-minded. Dissected readings, movies, essays, speeches. Accessible and flexible. Enjoyed the class even when it was online and would take again :)

If you ever need to knock out a GE or are interested in Chinese studies in general, please consider taking a course with Xiaomei. She is one of the most understanding and caring professors out there, she always made the class engaging, and she showed that she cared about the class. It was an amazing experience and I would 110% take this class again

A lot of reading, but the selections are all intriguing. Amazing and captivating lecturer. Only a few quizzes based off of assigned readings. Mostly in class discussion and dissecting the reading.

Xiaomei is so passionate about what she teaches. Usually, I find it difficult to pay attention if a professor doesn't use some sort of presentation, but paying attention in this class was easy. Do the readings - you'll need them to participate in class and for the pop quizzes- and you'll pass with an A.

I took the honors course for this. Xiaomei is an excellent, nice professor. Easy to contact outside of lecture. Does a great job providing insight on material in an engaging way. She even encourages students to counter her arguments with their own thoughts. There was 1 essay, 1 midterm, 1 final. They aren't hard as long as you read the readings.

She is interesting and nice. She goes thru many critical thoughts about the reading. She doesnt use slides much, but if she uses, the slides wont make any sense if you skip the class. One 5-7 pages paper, one midterm and final. Tests are based on details that she covered in class in the form of short answer and essay questions.

A pretty easy professor. Unfortunately, I took a risk on the term paper and wrote about something not really discussed in class. Ended up with a B+. Make sure you do well on the term paper. I wouldn't worry TOO much about the midterm or final but still, study for them. I also like the way she says "I in the reader" lol

Easiest class I've taken at UCD. Xiaomei's lectures are incredibly interesting. If you like Chinese history, she gets deep into that too. She's really kind, if you go to her OH she's really helpful. Would take again!

Xiaomei is a great teacher. Her lectures weave in personal examples and keep the material meaningful. I took the honors course for CHN10, and it was pretty heavy reading, but not much other work. The grade you get really reflects whether or not you put in work. She is not a teacher that will give a free A, but her grades reflect the effort put in.

Professor Chen is amazing! She does have an accent but she is easy to understand. She repeats important points over and over again so you definitely know what to study for on the exam. Her lectures are so interesting and this is by far my favorite course taken at UCD :)

Lecture is nearly mandatory; roll was taken every day. Occasional easy pop quizzes on reading assigned the class before. Participation and active listening are a must, as the discussion leads to answers on the tests. Tests were very fair, not too easy or too hard. One 5 page essay at the end that can be difficult if you don't have experience.

She goes over the important things plenty of times, you'll get a good grade from the course as long as you try even a little. She wants her students to succeed and learn!

I don't know why anyone calls her a dragon lady - Xiaomei is a great teacher! She knows the subject very well and gives a lot of personal insight to her lectures. For the tests, memorize important dates and events. The final isn't cumulative but you should know the literary titles and their authors. Otherwise just come to class and take good notes.

I count vouch for her on office hours since I never went to them but I thought she was a fun lecturer - plus the movies were very interesting. She's very knowledgeable about Chinese modern lit and she clarifies things well in class. Take good notes and make sure to learn the dates and authors of the literature - she does test on them!

She is very helpful during OH, not only for the class but in general. Her lectures are very interesting, but it could be disorganized at times b/c it is very discussion-driven. The exams and papers are pretty straightforward as well.

I really enjoyed this class so much. Although there was quite a lot of reading, I didn't mind it at all. I read interesting things. The prof was also very nice and kind. She's so passionate about Chinese literature. The only thing that was kind of weird about this class was when she tried to encourage discussion and it's completely quiet.

Was very skeptical of taking an 8:00 am class, but this professor definitely made it worthwhile. Interesting lectures, open to students, and fostered comfortable learning environment. Clear expectations and guidelines. One of the best professors I've ever had. I also decided to major in Chinese after taking her course! :)

First of all, she is one of the best professor on the campus. She is clear, and she lets you kno exactly what we should study for the midterms and final. She also gives extra credit to boost a couple percent. Altho there may be lots of reading, it's not that hard. TAKE NOTES and don't MISS class!
