He speaks using so many words. Consistent word vomit that convolutes the concepts being taught. He would always go at least 10 minutes over class time. If you need to leave the lecture early, this means you have extra work having to go back to his lecture recording. Extremely knowledgable and intellectual, but not the best lecturer.

Dr. D was good - he was excited to teach and hosted helpful exam review sessions. However, this was still the hardest ( and most demanding) class I took. There were in class lectures, pre class lectures, bonus lectures, graded homework, and non-graded homework.I took AP classes (not chem) without studying much, that is NOT POSSIBLE in this class.

Dr. Dieckmann lectured well and always offered help to students who needed it. The ALEKS homework every week was the hardest part of the class. Tests were frequent (every 2-3 weeks) so staying on top of work in Gen Chem is important, but it isn't too hard to do well if you put the effort in.

For Fall 2020, the entire chemistry department has changed because of COVID. They have changed the exam to free-response and MC, while last year it was all MC. Just prepare yourself to work hard and dedicate 10000% of your time to GEN CHEM. IF you take it online, it doesn't matter who you take. But in person, take Professor Tony. He has the best!!

not a bad teacher, but if you have anxiety or get stressed/panicked easily, he won't really consider that. personally I like to meet teachers one on one just to let them know I exist, but he was scary and intimidating. goes off topic for lectures, but enjoyable for some students

For online, there were lectures, and then pre-recorded lectures you should watch. This is what takes up a lot of your time. He hosts review sessions and gives optional hw problems, which is used for review for tests. He is open to feedback and responds to emails quickly.

I'm in 1311 right now and am taking him for 1312 next semester. Solid choice. He leads the chem team, so he knows a bit more about when the tests are and how things work. Easy A. I took AP chem senior year and was a review. Tests have no surprises, REMEMBER TO DO BOOK HW. I put in like 2 hours a week and attend lectures and have gotten A on 3 tests

Probably the best professor to take for Gen Chem. Hes very well respected and truly explains the material instead of just reading from the slide. I took another professor for the second semester of Gen Chem for second semester and no one explains chemistry the way Dieckmanns does. Great lectures and aims to teach you the material.

His lectures are very detailed & he teaches the concept rather than the steps to solve a problem. Sometimes he goes too slow, and you end up cramming notes the day before the test. Attendance quizzes most lectures, and he doesn't upload solutions to example questions for his notes. He's a good teacher, but he's not for everyone. Do PLTL/SI for help

Professor occasionally goes off on tangents unrelated to class, which can be annoying. But, overall he was a pretty decent teacher. The ALEKS homework is time consuming and not really a helpful learning tool, but you have to do that regardless of your chemistry professor. Attendance is taken at the start of class.

I think out of all the chem profs he is the best at explaining concepts. He goes a little slow but his explanations are GREAT. Going to class is super important and he has a word of the day for attendance at the start of every lecture. Combine his lectures with gavva practice problems and you're set.

He seemed like he genuinely cared about what he was teaching. However, he made the online homework (during quarantine) significantly harder than all of the other professors. As well, he doesn't simplify things very well. Would not recommend if you struggle with chemistry at all.

Professor Dieckmann is def one of the better lecturers for Gen chem 1& 2 at UTD. His lectures are very clear and his has notes so you can just add your notes. Though sometimes his lectures tend to run a bit long, theyre worth paying attention to the whole way through because he explains concepts thoroughly. Do the HW to prepare for exams!

Took him for gen chem 1. All I have to say Is that you need to do the hw problems he assigns, aleks, and read over the textbook and you will get an A. Don't slack off on study or it will come bite you in the butt. You NEED to put in work to get back results in this class.

DONT B LAZY I actually really enjoyed his lectures, his tangents were p short (< 2min) & insightful for actually LEARNING how chemistry is applied rather than memorizing for a test. If you do the txtbook q's then exams are ez A - so put in the work. Attendance taken, only problem is lots of material covered right b4 exam, use PLTL/SI for extra help

He very clearly knows his material, but he's not the best at teaching it. Long tangents during lectures detracted from teaching other valuable material. My PLTL section was always ahead of what we were covering in the lecture section, so that wasn't very helpful. Be prepared to do a lot of self-study for this class.

Goes on long tangents. Is the head of the chem department and did nothing to make the class easier. He takes out all grades that are at a 40% or below (at least 45% of the class) before calculating the class average so he does not have to curve. ALEKS is completely unhelpful and covers material after the test. Do not take this class.

I would not recommend Dr.D for gen chem 2. He always went on long tangents about information we didn't even need for the exams and never finished the material on time. He also took so long to grade our exams which was frustrating. We got our fourth exam results after our final and we were only able to see it AFTER the final. How is that helpful!?!
