I took his Astro 10 class in the summer. I walked away from the class with an excellent education and an interest in astronomy. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He was a brilliant man, probably the most qualified that have ever graced the campus of Sierra campus, with elite credentials (graduate from MIT). I learned so much from him. RI

Comment:

Professor Houpis was a great instructor and he will be dearly missed. I wish I would have taken more classes from him while at SC. He had such a passion for Science and you could ask him just about anything and he often had the most insightful answers. Tragic loss for students and faculty alike.

great instructor, had him several years and always found him to be an honest instructor that was alway willing to help you understand astronomy. Harry became a dear friend and I was sorry to hear of his passing;He will be missed dearly.

I took his astronomy 11 class online. He seems alright, although it seemed like a lot of work for one credit. He requires you to stay up late a couple times (after midnight) regardless if you must work at 5 a.m. (like me). If you take his class make sure you follow his directions EXACTLY or you will be docked points.

His classes are pretty easy...group multiple choice tests, he gives you the exact final to study, and doesn't require attendence....quite speaker, making him hard to hear at times.

I took Astro 10 online and it was a VERY hard class. Professor Houpis is very clear on what he wants which helps, and he helps you through the discussion board with homework and tests, but overall it was a very tough class. You really have to work hard on the homework and tests, and its mostly out of the book, the star charts, and the internet.

Good lectures, great powerpoint. Pay attention and follow along you'll do well. Quizes tougher, their based on homework and in class lecture. Mid term and final not too bad. Homework done from book. Gives e.c, to help out your grade. Mr. Houpis is a good teacher.

Took both astro 10 & 11 over the summer. A tough pace when your at Blue Canyon at 12:00 am and have to work the next morning but a great-cool class. Loved Mr. Houpis. Astro 11 was great! I learned a lot.

I loved this class! He tried making jokes that were funny but usually only funny enough for a pity laugh. but he is a great teacher, knows the subject and used to work for NASA or something cool like that. EASY class just do the work.Always extra credit avail. I hardly studied and got 100% on the midterm. Got an A.. EASY

Harry is one of the best prof. I have ever had! His lectures are the funniest ever if you have a brain and a good sence of hummor. He offers enough extra credit to make failing his course impossible, unless ur really lazy.

I took his online class. He answererd questions relatively quickly and often in great detail. He has very good lectures available online that were helpful. Highly recommended. Be prepared to exercise the grey matter if you don't like math problems - there are a few formuals you'll come across. He also gives extra credit options to help catch up.

My rating is going to look good, but in truth he is just average. He did ok in the class, but one thing I'll never understand is his decision to rely heavily on group work in a math class. Working out new math material with a group is very frustrating, and I ended up skipping the class a lot just because I didn't want to deal with it.

Definiately the most BORING person to listen to. Extremely monotone, trys to throw in a joke every now & then, but most do not get them, due to the fact 1/2 the class is asleep from how uninteresting the lectures & his voice is. DO NOT TAKE HIM.

I really liked Mr. Houpis. The planetarium is an awesome setting and when he puts the stars up its soooo awesome!! He does go through topics a little fast, but there is always the book. I knew some astronomy going into the class, so its not that hard and overall the class is really easy. Third hour sucks. And do study for the tests!!!

ONLINE. Astron 10 is pretty easy, he makes you use the math that was explained in the text, be prepared to work for the answers. He puts up the hw in advance and the grading is quick. Personally he is a prick, he thinks he is smarter than you and doesnt give 2 craps about you as a student unless you join his pi theta gama honors club.

Professor Houpis is great. He can seem a lil mean at times, but thats just how his personality is. He is acually a really cool guy once you get to know him. His class is designed to help make non-science majors do good. make sure you work in groups for HW and study the test your self questions in the back of the book before each test.

Every class is just lectures, kinda boring. Some chapters are really hard, some are easier. The tests are easy if you study (i think the homeword was harder than any test). I definitly learned some interesting things about the universe.

there is NO DOUBT that this man is smart. i could tell that the first day of class. and there is no doubt he's brilliant in astronomy. he's just too smart to teach math i think....i'm just not getting it with him....slightly unclear on what he wants and does fumble over his words a little, which can make things confusing. nice guy though! he's got that!
