He teaches well, but it is not one of his strong skills. He needs to communicate his course expectations better, but he gives useful feedback on assignments.

Overheard this guy kowtowing to tenured professors in their department, yet treats students with no respect?!? Lack of understanding toward academic processes and how to do business at a university. Glad I don't have any more classes with him.

I took this class online, found it to be interesting and pretty easy. Easy weekly assignments and followed the syllabus. However Chang had little to do with it. His TA was AMAZING, provided great feedback, graded everything in a timely manner, was available for questions. Never heard from the prof. If your TA is good so is the class, if not.....

This teachers communication is lacking in more ways than one. I have emailed several times regarding assignments and I never once received an answer that was responding to the question that I asked or in a way that was understandable. Don't take classes from this teacher. Very dry way of teaching, no engagement with other students and BUSY WORK!!!

This guy is not meant to teach. He belongs in a lab. Communication is a huge problem, doesn't engage the class or have an organized approach for teaching his students or of a grading system. I personally wrote the department dean a letter in regards to this teacher as well as 8 of my other classmates. Don't take his class if you can help it!!

Had Dr. Chang for two classes this term. Each class was exactly the same in that the entire class was disorganized, poorly structured (useless syllabus), and language was a huge barrier. For both classes, we had to teach ourselves the material from the text. He just reads slides and doesn't engage students--terrible teacher, great researcher.

This class was a total waste of time. I spent more time trying to understand what he was saying than learning the content. I guess he gets lots of grants, but I think he should just stick to that because he is a terrible instructor. If you work for him apparently you will get a chance to publish a paper, but beyond that don't take his class!

To the comment below: I found this class a tad more interesting than watching paint dry. I did however find counting sand more interesting though. Grades extremely fair in my opinion, but the reading is a drag; the book jumps all over and extremely difficult to follow. Pretty easy class but be warned!

He was a amazing teacher, friendly and helpful in and outside the class. His class was worth enough credit to help your grade. I have learned a lot from this class.

I don't he's QUITE as bad as everybody says. Yes his labs are a complete waste of time and energy (even though they're easy) but at least he's easy to get along with

Stay away, I had online university cluster class he graded me incredibly low on my final project. He never discussed or said there is anything wrong with my topic selection selection. His feedback was extremely unhelpful I am just so disappointed with this class.

I have never withdrawn from a class befor this. Lectures were unclear, labs ahead of what was being taught, use of different terms to describe smae things, and hard to recieve help from Chang, made GEOG 597 impossible for me.

Professor Chang is frustratingly unhelpful and unclear in his expectations for this class. His grading is completely arbitrary, his feedback is worthless (not to mention full of grammatical errors) and he has changed the syllabus twice now without notifying the class. I would highly recommend NOT taking a class from Chang.

The class subject matter was what you would expect. About as interesting as watching paint dry. I'm a geography major and this was one of the driest courses I've taken. The text is god-awful. Work load is very reasonable as are the tests. If you need to round out your schedule I say why not.

I took this class online, so I was not expecting much interaction with Chang. The text is horrible; very lengthy and a dull read, especially for those who are non Geog majors like me. There is not much material used outside the textbook so the base of the classwork is reading the long chapters then doing the weekly post and quiz.

I've had him for two completely opposite types of courses: Geog 399 Clackamas which is a 2-credit field trip class and very easy, and Geog 497 - Spatial Quantitative Analysis which is horribly hard for me. (Note: his accent is only a minor issue.) His tests can be challenging and don't necessarily test what was covered during class.

To Dr. Chang's defense, I believe the only barrier that exists in any of his classes is that of passive efforts by students at learning difficult material. Excluding Dr. Hadley's classes, I learned more in Chang's classes than any other in the department - and it took effort. He's tough but fair. Is that not what we paid for?

I was in the first class he taught (2002)and was hoping that he would improve. Language is indeed a problem and he has very high expectations, but if he was more tolerant/flexible, the language problems would be easier to deal with.

This teacher is HORRIBLE. Language is a barrier. Teaches the class as if it was a graduate course and does not take into consideration that there are non-majors in his class. Very math oriented. Doesn't clarify what he expects from students.
