Dr. Orr gives super fun lectures and the class has amazing discussion. My one issue with this class is that Dr. Orr does not give clear instructions on his assignments, so it makes it difficult to do well because you don't know what he expects. I would recommend lots of rereading of your papers.

John is very smart, friendly, helpful, and energetic, which is a major plus being that the class was at 8:10. As long as you put in the effort you'll be fine. He even meets with us to go over our big paper (10 pp.)-I wish my other profs did this! More discussion over the material could help, but this class and prof greatly improved my writing (:

Attendance is mandatory, & he counts sleeping in class as an absence. Wrote three essays (2-3 pgs), one of which could be revised and one major paper (6-8 pgs) which could also be revised. Hard grader, but very helpful both in and out of class. He gives interesting lectures & is very intelligent. Overall an excellent professor.

Fun professor to watch in class, but lecture topics had nothing to do with the material, and good attendance is a must (ironic, given the lectures). Don't expect replies to emails or help/understanding with any school problems caused by personal issues. Overall - Entertaining but useless class.

He makes his students work for their grades, but the payoff is real learning. Plus, his sweet southern accent is a pleasure to hear.

His class was frustrating because we never really discussed the material- he just lectured about obscure points of what we'd read in the book the night before. You have to work hard for good grades, too. But I liked him, he's a nice guy and he was really, really helpful outside of class. I guess more effort required than other classes.

Challenging, which results in comments like the ones below, but amazingly helpful, knowledgeable, witty, and interesting. Lectures/seminars were insightful. He is not biased and is open to various intellectual discussions both in class and out.

He doesn't want you to say anything if you don't agree with him. If you can't read his mind you aren't going to score well on his papers.

Very frustrating prof. If your willing to agree with everything he says, and not have your own ideas, you'll be fine. otherwise he'll mark you down. Do really well on the first paper because all your grades following that will be in that range. He's ok when it comes to lectures, a lot of energy to keep you awake but overall i wouldn't take him

He is the kind of professor who entices others to become professors themselves. I never missed one day of his classes for fear that some integral piece of information pass me by. The best professor at the University hands down. The man knows more stuff about more stuff... he even offered help on my thesis project when he WASN'T my thesis advisor.

Smartest, funniest, most caring, most challenging teacher at UP, and best advisor to boot. He doesn't give away those As; you have to earn them. American Women Writers is great, 19th century US is great, American Modernism(s) is staggeringly amazing but not for the faint of heart. I worship him like a god.

Dr. Orr is the cream of the crop in the English department. He's an entertaining lecturer, a challenging grader and constantly works to engage the class in discussion of the material. You don't want to miss a single lecture and find yourself enjoying the paper writing. Every student should take him.

Its a tough but fair class, you really have to write a draft and revise it before you turn in an essay if you want a good grade. A good english teacher for someone in a science major, very accessable. Just try not to get it in the morning.

This professor is a great teacher. He helps you when needed. You only have response papers throughout the semester and he grades you on the quality and content of your thoughts. 2 big papers and one essay final. Very easy and I enjoyed his humor throughout the class. I'd recomend him any day.
