I just thought I would register some last thoughts about Dr. Hoffman so his life on this site would end on an honest note.Dr. Hoffman was a supreme example of what a professor of philosophy should be.He was intellectually rigorous, demanding, available, encouraging of all types of comments-informed or not.All he required was a willingness to learn.

THis class was ridiculous! All you do is take pages and pages of notes. You think you do well on the essays and you get C+ everytime. The final was long as hell and there's way too much info to know in this class. DOn't recommend taking it unless you love philosophy about spinoza, descartes, hume, and berkeley

This class is very difficult and boring. I would not recommend taking it at all unless you really have too. He grades way too hard for the way he teaches.

Comment:
Gives bad and unclear lectures; however, he grades as if he gave really good lectures. Doesn't seem to teach with enthusiasm or clarity. Has very boring way of lecturing and sometimes he isn't even sure of what he means. Grades unfair for the way he teaches. overall I say avoid taking this class if u don't need it.

Reads verbatim out of the book. Does not know his material when lecturing. Hard grader. Very unclear about what he wants from his students. Not available for students. Overall, he is a horrible lecturer who grades ridiculously hard. Do not take his classes, they are a waste of money and time. He is not worthy of being a professor.

Spends little time on initial stage-setting and motivation, settles in too quickly on theoretical nuances. Great person for batting around ideas--provided you respect the bounds of his intellectual tradition. He won't feel your rhythm if you march to the beat of a different drum.

Excellent professor, great class. Lots of reading, etc but if you like the subject it is interesting. He is very helpful and willing to answer any questions you might have. If you didn't like this class, it's probably because you don't like philosophy!

Hoffman is a cool professor to learn from. His subject matter is very difficult but he does a good job explaining it and really cares about making sure his students understand the material. Sort of dry personality but hey, he's a Philosophy Professor.

Bright and willing to discuss philosophy and look at drafts/revisions of papers. However, comments tend to be unhelpful as he fails to help us work through our problems. HARD grader! An insipid lecturer and un-communicative person. But he does have keen
