I would not recommend taking a course with Dr.Haven. He is EXTREMELY unclear of class expectations and then will accuse you of PLAGIARISM even if you clearly did not.He is all about your own interpretations of poems, yet will accept anything that he does not agree with.

He was one of the worst English professors I had. He gave me crap for missing for a academic organization but he could fly to a confrence and cancel/reinstate class. He is completely unclear with what he wants and tells you to think on multiple levels.

He is extremely willing to help you if you ask and do the work. His ideas are sometimes a little out there, but his points are valid and helpful. If you give him a chance, he'll take you the mile.

When I wrote paper for him, he was not happy with it. I asked him what he wanted, and all he gave me was "Read the book again." Topics related to the class disccussion were always boring.

Haven is one of the kindest professors on campus. He will bend over backwards to help you if you do your part. He is a little scatterbrained and not exactly the most exciting guy around but if you like to read and learn he is the man for you.

Comment:

Definitely a poet but did better in his English courses than his Creative Writing courses. Be prepared to speak/ discuss and make sure if you aren't good with grammar etc. to go to the writing center for your first paper at least. He can be a tough grader but is willing to discuss why he marks what he marks. He makes sure he has office time available and is flexible w/ deadlines. Just don't expect a cakewalk if you skip a lot.

He told me to send out to serious journals when I was 19 -- I think that proves he is open to others' poetry besides his own. Also, maybe he is looking for real conversation and students who are not willing to do this kind of thing should steer clear of him and pretty much the entire political science dept. (esp. Thompson & Schramm).

Dr. Haven's class is very interesting if you go in with an open mind. He wants you to give your opinion. If you are looking for a class to just sit and do nothing, shy away from him. If you are looking for a professor who loves writing and creative thinking, he is your man.

Dr. Shaven (as I call him) is very helpful. Like most english professors, his thinking process is out there and he looks too deeply into things, but he is always willingly to clear things up for you and help you.
