John is a true lover of art and promoter of creativity. Classes have a very chill atmosphere, but are in no way unproductive. Unbiased and helps you to explore and develop your own particular style. Teaches by demonstration rather than word alone and puts a big emphasis on class critiques which allow for multiple perspectives to be exchanged.

There is absolutely no structure to this class. He doesn't use canvas and there is no syllabus so you have no idea what is going on, what you're supposed to be doing, or when anything is due. He will just demo for 3 hours talking about random stuff.

I learned so much useful rendering technique and anatomy from John this semester that I have a hard time soaking all the info in. Make no mistake John is a master of his craft and he has a depth of knowledge on the figure which will be essential for any aspiring artist at the U to draw upon. He is not an instructor; he is your art sensei. I have taken four classes from John. He speaks in metaphors, but they make sense, and they're fun. Learn to speak Erickson. His classes are not about a grade. He wants artists to excel. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I respect him so much that I don't want to disappoint him. Now get back in the ring!

I didn't know what to expect at first! I didn't get a syllabus, and I couldn't tell if attendance was mandatory or not (its not), and he never used the online grading. BUT!! John is an amazing artist, and an awesome/helpful professor. BE PATIENT... Thats my advice. Be ready to watch a lot of demos, that if you pay attention, are very very useful.

Prof. Ericksen is very helpful in showing exactly how to do assignments and finishing them. He knows a lot and is happy to sit down with anyone who will ask and show them what their doing wrong. He sometimes can do things a little slow though.
