I was in her U.S. Imperialism in Hawai'i class. The group project and debate was great. The overall teaching style lacks charisma and I often wanted to withdraw because I dragged my feet to get to class. Only a couple of readings assigned were interesting and the lectures were not engaging.

Lili runs a well-organized, fun class. Her unassuming manner puts everyone at ease. You do have to read a lot and keep up with the reading. She is really helpful outside the classroom as well and goes out of her way to make sure you succeed. She really cares about the wellbeing of her students. She is very encouraging.

Lili empowers students to find their voice. She sets up the classroom dynamics so that you can speak up without being ridiculed or afraid. Her ability to lead discussion is amazing. Readings are excellent.

Comment:

I took Professor Kim's Asian American History class at Harvard. Amazing discussions and lectures. The books and films she used generated great discussions both in and outside the class. She was very helpful with paper assignments outside the class. Lots of reading but your hard work will pay off.

I also took the the Narrative in U.S. Immigration History at Harvard with Professor Kim while she was a visiting Professor, and I completely agree with the comment below. She's awesome and wish she were teaching at Harvard! She so dedicated and takes her students seriously and really helps you thrive as an intellectual.

i took professor kim's gender, migration, globalization research seminar at harvard when she was a visiting professor there. amazing class! i got so much out of the class and professor kim was on top of her stuff. it was very helpful for my senior thesis.

Comment:

She taught a reading seminar on narratives in US immigration history while on sabbatical. It was an awesome class--she was great at leading discussions and chose an excellent mix of genres and mediums for us to explore through the semester. My interest in history has been revived as a result. I only wish that she was actually a prof at my school.

The class I took with Lili Kim was History of Love and Dating. She was often absent, citing illness as the reason. She was thoroughly unhelpful when myself and other students attempted to get in touch with her through email, often not responding for a week. Put quite simply, she is a disorganized person with little interest in her students.

Honestly, I wish the TA would have taught this class instead of her... Maybe I would have learned more. She missed a lot of classes and wouldn't know how to run a good discussion if she had a manual right in front of her. She didn't care about the class and neither did any of the students.

Good texts, but they're rarely used. Interesting assignments but with no cohesive in-class followup. She'll take a day off then "make up" the class on YOUR day off, even though the TA (who she randomly picked when she fails to show) was there leading discussion when Lili wasn't. Don't miss more than 5 classes, and don't worry about late paper

Wtf, man. She mostly came off as saccharine or snarky, and taught an intensely boring class to boot. This course was a foolish misuse of my time- the material and professor are mediocre at best, and I'll bet you one dollar the positive comments have come from her TAs. Sorry.

Lili is awesome! This is a great, fun class. some lamos didn't do the reading and just wanted to talk about their own experiences, but the reading is so interesting, and Lili always tried to bring discussion into focus. Very engaging and energetic teacher, and super sweet too!
