Comment:

Vance definitely know what he's talking about and loves it, however he's not very good at actually teaching the material. Interesting class but if you'll want to get a good grade in the class you need to study it yourself, the random lectures about how star wars is a horrible portrayal of space won't do it

Comment:

He is a sweet guy and passionate about the subject but he does treat it like students are studying to attend NASA and reach outer space. All the exams are just memory of his jokes or insignificant fact. Studying is almost pointless.

I took the ASTR 105 class/lab at 9 am, due to snow and other weather it was difficult to almost impossible to get to class on time and get the full lecture. I asked Vance through email if I could get some help or if I could do work outside class and turn it in later and got no response other than "arrive on time" not very helpful.

Do yourself a favor, buy the book and teach yourself at home. For the astronomically niave, he will confuse you to no end. He loves making jokes but does not realize that those who do not know about space will take his jokes seriously. The videos he chose made me want to light myself on fire. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR

He is so very knowledgeable about space! He is very good at teaching it as well. It is just such an interesting class. He does have some pop quizzes but are usually fairly simple. I personally didn't use the textbook but other said that they did.

He is not a bad professor. He enjoys the material and that comes through in his lectures with his youthful energy and charismatic personality. He will often teach from he pet peeves rather than actual material. quizzes and tests are not to bad if you study for them with good notes from class, as there are always questions about some "cool fact."

He's a great guy but treats everyone like they're astronomy majors. He gets too excited about the material and tries to impress students with crazy facts instead of explaining the material. Gives lots information and it's very overwhelming. Exams are very difficult and will have questions only related to the lectures and not found in the notes.

difficult course for me. a lot of information and can be overwhelming. I went to class everyday, took detailed notes, studied outside of class and still bad on exams :/ PowerPoints are not online. Gives quizzes as extra credit which only helps if you know the material and are good at retaining information. wish i never took this course :(

Prof. Vance is a funny, charismatic, and interesting guy. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about Astronomy, but also needlessly egotistical. If you say "bless you" when someone sneezes, he has to comment, "why do people still say that?" every time. It isn't offensive, it's just irrelevant and comes across as an injection of ego.

Vance is a great instructor. He's very passionate about Astronomy and about teaching. A lot of students taking the ASTR 105 course are taking it for general education credit - those are the students who might not be as into it, and want to slack off. But if you love the subject and want to be there and learn, I wouldn't recommend anyone else.

He knows what he was talking about. Typical nerdy professor. He doesn’t curve or gives extra credit out side of his quizzes that he adds on to your test score. Don’t buy the book. Not worth it. Go to class and take notes! All in all he’s just strict. If you’re a good test taker you’ll be fine. If you are not, don’t expect anything above a C.

This class is horrible. Vance is a genius on the subject and teaches as if we are all astronomy majors. He is very boring in his lectures and I fall asleep almost everyday! He also goes way too fast in the lectures and PP slides and asks you to remember an incredible amount of information.

Norb clearly knows Astronomy. He has an intimate understanding of the subject and clearly loves it. But that does not by any means make him a good instructor. His lectures are disjointed and he never actually "teaches" anything. Tests you on material that he never covered in class but will claim that he did. Needs to revamp his teaching style!

I'm genuinely interested in Astronomy, so take that into account when reading this. Class was incredibly interesting. assigns reading, but I did not find it necessary. 4 50 multiple choice exams that are really not that hard at all if you pay attention in class. He's a nice guy if you're down with Astronomy and not purely concerned with the grade.

What a goofy man. He tells very cheesy jokes (its best to just laugh at him). Pop quizes when you least expect it. Hard class but if you study and go to class regularly you will be fine. pay attention to personal stories he tells you, and remember what kind of car he drives. He tends to put random things on quizes about himself. So pay attention!

If you go to class (like you should), take notes (like you should), and study for tests (like a good college student should)-you will have no problem with this class. It's only 15 weeks of you life, suck it up. Mr. Vance tells cheesy jokes, and makes astronomy fun!

Great guy and a good teach. If you're not in class pretty much every day, you'd better be damn good at this if you want a decent grade. I knew a LOT about this before I even took the class and had to actually work to get my A. Writes some truly difficult multiple choice questions which oddly is not an oxymoron in his case. Loved it though.

I don't care what anyone says, I LOVED this class. So interesting. If you take notes and simply study from them you will pass and do well in this class. Vance is very passionate about astronomy and i loved how he incorporated slideshows and videos in his lectures. Excellent teacher.
