He is an old, hard-of-hearing & obviously tenured professor so he's still around . His lectures are painful but he is brilliant and has a sense of humor... plus his apparent dementia is setting in so it's worth a giggle when you witness it. I passed while barely attending class because of his study guides. He doesn't take attendance so who cares?

Professor Giese is old, soft-spoken, and monotone which makes lectures a drag. However, he gives out study guides for each of his exams that literally tell you what questions will be on the tests. Exams are two essay questions and a few short answers. A term paper is due on the last day of class. I passed with an A while barely attending class.

Honestly, the only reason I didn't enjoy his class was because of the lectures. They are incredibly boring and no one ever shows up. Aside that, he is a really nice guy with a very sarcastic sense of humor. You can tell he is brilliant, however, I just think he may be getting little too old to be lecturing students. Great man though!

Attendance is not mandatory and he gives a review session before an exam. Sit in the front, record the lecture if you can and fill out your sheet while you go along with him in class. You will surely pass. DON'T BE LATE!! 2 - 4 essay questions (1 page essays) and 5 out of 7 short i.d.'s is your whole test. TERM PAPER AT END OF SEMESTER

Dr. Giese is not the world's greatest teacher, but I would recommend taking a class with him any way. The man is brilliant, and if you take the effort to talk to him in person he is one of the most helpful professors I've ever had. Lectures can be dull, but data analysis is a dull subject to begin with

Lectures: painfully tedious & next to impossible to hear, even when sitting in front row. No textbook: poorly-written, confusing "Chapters" posted on UB Learns. Posts a review sheet before exams & many answers cannot be found in Chapters. Exams are two essay questions worth 35pts & 5 short answers. Rarely responds to emails. Just awful. Stay away.

In Data Analysis using MATLAB, didn't (1) teach the stats functions, and (2) teach the Matlab usage. When asked for help, his response, most commonly, is: 'you did this wrong, and why did you display all this garbage?'. My second course with Giese, with the same 'teaching' style used in both. Do NOT take if he's avoidable.

Ever seen Ferris Beuller's Day Off? Know who Ben Stein is? Thats this man, minus the humor. His material is verbose and antiquated, his teaching style rivals mother goose as a bed time story. Good Luck. you've been warned.

Even though the topics were extremely interesting to me, he made it so hard for me to enjoy learning about it. his low monotone voice could put you right to sleep even with me sitting in the front of the class. he is very intelligent just not the best at making it enjoyable to learn.

If you are not a Geology major, you will find virtually no enjoyment in this class. I sit in the front row and still cannot hear him. When I asked him a question once, he told me to "look it up." His tests are horrible and reflect nothing in the lecture/text. You will probably pass, but it will be the most painstaking 1 1/2 hours of your life.

I can tell this man is absolutely brilliant, but he cannot teach an intro level to save his life. I read the book prior to the exam and I can tell you it didn't help me whatsoever. His review sheets are near pointless. He tests very specifically rather than what is covered in class. I went to every single lecture and...no benefit!

Class Act. Can tell he enjoys the finer things in life. Don't let his subtle sense of humor sneak up on you and wake you up from his terribly boring lectures. Teaches with great historical perspective through the use of films from the early and mid nineteenth century. His silent films are riveting, add in his commentary and a good time awaits.

Dr. Giese is studying the effects of Clay on MRSA which is both critical and fascinating. It is very important for the entire human race. This moronic rating system is ludicrous. The general idea is that you go to school to learn something - not get a good mark. Are you afraid that a tough teacher might actually teach you something...

Data analysis is a pretty boring subject, Giese is a good teacher though. He's really helpful if you drop by his office, not really by e-mail. The class could be taught better, but it is useful. And I don't know what the reviewer from 11/26/03 is talking about, there is NO gender bias at all.

I've taken many classes with Dr.Geise and he is a wonderful instructor but you have to do your work. He covers lots of material and if you're lazy it will show in your grade. I like have those unexpected days off, when he cancels. Dry sense of humor, very funny.
