Comment:

Hands down the best professor I have experienced at SMU. Dr. Stretton really cares about his students, he does what he can to help them develop a great mindset for the study of history. Extremely engaging and wonderful topics. If 100% of my classes were taught by Dr. Stretton, I would be getting one hell of an amazing education.

Comment:

Stretton created a very engaging learning environment despite the class being online. Students are encouraged to participate (participation is the backbone of the course). Only one paper (worth a lot), and few tests.

super good prof, they say he's a tough marker but I didn't find he was that tough. I got A's and B's on exams and papers. He wants you to fo well and is willing to help out. Participation and attendance was weighed pretty heavily (20%), no book needed, and no final exam. Would definitely take another class with him

Comment:

Very clear in what he wanted from us. He made a very dry course interesting by using different methods and group projects. He was always in a good mood and super helpful when it came to the ONE essay we had to write for his class. Gives amazing feedback, and if you listen to it (especially for the essay) you will do amazing. Highly recommend!!

Comment:

Prof. Stretton is one of the best profs I've had so far at SMU. His lectures remain interesting despite the course material being somewhat dry, and he tries to incorporate different types of classes such as group work and a mock trial. His grading is fair, and he tries hard to prepare students for higher level courses by giving excellent feedback.

Fairly difficult marker but is extremely knowledgeable in his field. He also makes solid efforts to present course material in a way that doesn't make you want to beat your face off the table. Got B's and A's on papers/exams without a great deal of effort. You don't need to thoroughly research topics, just know what they are and why they matter.

Super helpful, very thankful that I had him my first year and semster. He helped me so much with my writting and how actually to cite sources. This teacher is a great choice, take any of his classes you wont be disapointed

Great Prof! Very knowledgeable in his field of study (mainly British history). You had to attend the course to do well (Participation mark). He explained his assignments very clearly and assisted when asked (Got an A on the final paper). His final, though, was VERY open-ended which made it hard to do! Definitely a prof to take!

Best professor on this planet earth. You'll love him guaranteed, even if you hate history. Speaks loud and clear, lessons well organized, sense of humour, gives great examples, clearly knows his stuff and loves his field. Personable and caring about individual students. He will bend over backwards to help you succeed, and you'll want to.

Dr. Stretton is the best! If/when he comes back to SMU- take a class with him! He is approachable, engaging and a great professor - I wish I could take more classes with him! I'm not sure why others think that he is a hard marker, I had no issues and learned a lot.

Amazing prof, shame he's leaving. Takes student feedback into consideration as to what the final exam will consist of, allows make-up tests... just wants everyone to do well. Makes history interesting and is very open to various interprations. A bit of a tough grader. Highly recommend.

Great prof. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He makes History really fun with his whit and charm. Love his Aussie accent too! Tough marker sometimes, but he really tries hard to make you know the details, not just the general topic. He likes to hear your theories about why something might have happened and how its is linked with other topics.

GREAT professor. Actually cares about students- super approachable. Although material may be dry at times... always trys to make class interesting. Pay attention, seek help when needed, and take good notes... you will be fine. One of my favourite profs at SMU!

Comment:

Great, very endearing prof, uses humor and cultural references to tie everything together.He Learned everyone's names and gives feedback in person which is very helpful. Lectures were very informative, I could easily listen to that sultry aussie accent for hours, best prof I've had, I'm surprised he's at SMU and not somewhere more prestigous.
