Comment:
Dr. Sullivan was a difficult teacher. If you do not like to do the readings or participate do not take this class. The quizzes were extremely hard because the wording of his questions were always long and dense. He also got extremely flustered with brightspace and this would affect his mood during class and create a very tense atmosphere.

Comment:
Dr. Sullivan definitely knows his material but his class was incredibly dense and confusing. He would constantly pick on someone to answer a question and then ridicule them if they got the answer incorrect. He lives off forced participation. If you don't read in this class or do not like to speak up in class, you will find this class hard.

Dr. Sullivan is fantastic because he actually makes you understand the world at the time you are learning about, not just making you memorize a bunch of facts. He has been better than any philosophy or lit trad teacher at UD in terms of actually stimulating me to think about the material and on my own beliefs. Huge asset to UD. Tough tests though.

Comment:
Dr. Sullivan is smart, but he is kind of one of those smart but condescending professors. That did not keep me from enjoying his class. The dude is a renaissance man; he mixes subject material from politics, psychology, science, and even math into his lectures, which I thought was pretty cool. He is one of those golden age professors, so take him!

The Best Professor for West Civ and probably one of the best professor at UD! Dr. Sullivan is very hilarious and approachable. He'll tell you what to focus to study on exams. My suggestion is to type your notes on a laptop because there are a lot of things to remember.

I took WestCivI during interterm and loved it! Dr. Sullivan is super nice and he is real with you (tells you what you should expect to see on the exam). He also provides a lot of extra credit opportunity and is very helpful if you have any questions.

was great until a recent incident, where he became unhinged when he discovered the bookstore gave the students a wrong text. once when asked to clarify his interpretation of a paragraph, his answer was to state that he was a scholar and that other scholars agreed with him, so we could either agree with him or be counted off. Totally unprofessional.

Difficult, but worth it. Assume everything he says will be on the test and write it down. Lectures are incredibly insightful, straightforward, and genuinely interesting but WRITE THEM DOWN. Personally cares deeply about students and goes out of his way to help. If you're good about reaching out to him with questions, you should do fine.

Dr. Sullivan is a dedicated professor who clearly enjoys and understands the material, However, if he's in a bad mood or if anyone in class doesn't show 100% investment in the class, you're in for a treat. He can be condescending, nervous and rude. If you can look past his character, he is a wonderful professor.

A wonderful professor. Take his classes if you want to learn. Let's face it: much of the time we finish a class, we can barely articulate what we learned. Not so with Dr. Sullivan. Study well, and you'll come out of his lecture with a general competency on the subject matter. Also, outline note-taking form works extremely well for his lectures!!

Fantastic professor. He is obviously passionate about history and values intelligence and critical thinking. Not an easy class by any means, but if you come to class, read the material, and respond thoughtfully to questions in class/on tests you will be fine. Fair and clearly structured grading style. I took as many classes as possible with him.

Dr. Sullivan is a really hard grader. There were only 2 tests and they were HARD. You really have to know what you are talking about because there is a lot of information. He is very intelligent and his lectures are engaging. He gave out extra credit when we asked for it.

You will feel very uneasy in this class, how do I know? Because in one class when I (stupidly) looked at another textbook, he tried to make an example of me in front of the class. He's insulting, and demeaning, and unapologetic. All of the laughter accompanying his lectures is nervous laughter because he is that uncomfortable to be with.

DO NOT EVEN THINK OF DOING ANYTHING OUTSIDE OF TAKING NOTES ON A LAPTOP. You've been warned. Bring the material to class - if you don't, pop quiz. Tests are hard. Read. Take notes. Ask (intelligent) questions. He's high strung but tons of fun to listen to. Don't let his up state complaining get to you - it is just how he is. This guy is awesome.

Dr. Sullivan is a very good professor as far as the teaching itself is concerned, but I'll be honest, I was shocked by his rudeness to my peers when they didn't show the level of dedication to his class that HE deemed appropriate. Read the core texts and ASK him for help if you need it. Reading quizes on primary sources. Non-cumulative final.

Took a few of his classes, he talked down to students and assumed they didn't want to be there. Also played favorites. Was unclear on expectations for exams, said material wouldn't be on there and it was. Felt the need to constantly share his political views. Wouldn't recommend him. There are much better professors at UD.
